Everyday life across Asia is being heavily disrupted by a fuel crisis triggered by the war involving Iran.

The effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz after the United States and Israel launched military action against Iran in late February has sent shockwaves through global energy markets. Oil prices have surged, stock markets have become unstable, and uncertainty remains high over when the key shipping route—through which around 20% of global oil passes—will fully reopen.

At present, only a small number of vessels are able to pass through the strait each day. At the same time, continued attacks on energy infrastructure in the region have pushed prices even higher.

Asia has been hit especially hard, since nearly 90% of the oil and gas transported through the strait is destined for Asian countries. The effects are already visible across the continent.

Governments in several countries have responded by ordering remote work, shortening working weeks, declaring public holidays, and closing universities early in an effort to reduce energy consumption.

Even China, which reportedly holds reserves equal to about three months of imports, has taken steps to limit fuel price increases despite a sharp rise in domestic costs of around 20%.

Although the conflict is far away geographically, people across Asia describe its impact as immediate and severe in their daily lives.

Philippines

The Philippines has declared a national emergency, citing risks to the stability and availability of its energy supply.

The effects are strongly felt among public transport workers, especially jeepney drivers. One driver, Carlos Bragal Jr, says his daily income has dropped dramatically—from around 1,000–1,200 pesos for a 12-hour shift to just 200–500 pesos.

He explains that drivers were already under pressure from taxes and suspended fare increases, but rising fuel prices have now pushed many into extreme hardship. Some drivers, he says, are earning nothing at all.

Carlos, who has supported his family through this job, says his future is now uncertain. He fears that if conditions continue, many families like his will be devastated.

Fishermen and farmers are also struggling due to high fuel costs. Some vegetable farmers in Bulacan have already stopped planting crops.

Although the government has introduced cash assistance and fuel subsidies, many workers say it is not enough to cover their losses.

Thailand

In Thailand, the fuel crisis has led to unusual public measures aimed at reducing energy use.

A well-known news presenter, Sirima Songklin, and her colleagues at Thai PBS recently appeared on air without jackets to encourage energy-saving behavior in hot weather.

She explained that while removing suits is symbolic, it was meant to show public awareness and set an example.

The government has also instructed citizens to set air conditioners between 26–27°C, encouraged remote work for government agencies, and promoted energy conservation measures.

Officials, however, continue to insist that Thailand will have sufficient energy supplies.

Sri Lanka

In Sri Lanka, citizens note a striking reversal compared to the country’s previous crisis.

As one resident in Colombo pointed out, the country once lacked money to buy fuel, while now it has funds but faces limited availability of fuel itself.

After emerging from a severe financial crisis in 2022, Sri Lanka has stabilized somewhat but remains cautious. The government has introduced measures such as weekly public holidays and fuel rationing.

However, long queues at fuel stations are affecting daily life and work.

Some workers say they are unable to attend jobs because they spend so much time waiting for fuel, while others fear losing their positions due to delays caused by rationing.

Myanmar

In Myanmar, which has been in civil conflict since 2021, authorities have introduced an alternate-day system for private vehicles to conserve fuel.

For many people, the impact is more social than professional, affecting when they can meet friends or travel freely.

Residents also worry that rising prices could lead to a growing black market for fuel, adding further instability to an already difficult economic situation.

India

India, the world’s most populous country, has been significantly affected by disruptions since the end of February.

Millions of Indian workers in Gulf countries are experiencing direct consequences, while domestically, shortages of oil and gas are affecting both households and industries.

In Gujarat, a shortage of gas has forced parts of the ceramics industry to shut down for weeks, leaving hundreds of thousands of workers uncertain about their future.

Many workers fear losing their livelihoods if the shutdown continues, with some saying they may struggle to afford basic needs without income.

In major cities like Mumbai, many restaurants and hotels have partially or fully closed due to cooking gas shortages. Menus have been reduced, long queues for gas cylinders have formed, and restaurant operators warn that the situation is becoming critical.

Across the country, supply concerns continue to grow even as authorities try to reassure the public that shortages will be managed.
