Ex-Alameda Research CEO Caroline Ellison Sentenced to Two Years for $11 Billion FTX Fraud Scheme

FTX Fraud Scheme

Caroline Ellison, the former CEO of Alameda Research and key witness in the trial of FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried, has been sentenced to two years in prison for her role in the $11 billion FTX fraud scheme.

Ellison, who was also romantically involved with Bankman-Fried, testified extensively during the trial, detailing how she assisted in funneling billions of dollars in customer funds to cover Alameda Research’s losses.

Ellison’s testimony over three days was crucial in securing Bankman-Fried's conviction, leading to his 25-year prison sentence.

Despite her cooperation with federal prosecutors, the 29-year-old was unable to avoid prison time herself, although she had hoped that her full disclosure and remorse would spare her a sentence behind bars.

FTX Fraud Scheme

The collapse of FTX in November 2022 was triggered by a news report based on a leaked Alameda balance sheet, which led to a mass withdrawal of customer funds. Days later, FTX filed for bankruptcy protection. As the CEO of Alameda Research, Ellison admitted to helping Bankman-Fried misuse FTX customer funds for risky investments and deceiving lenders about the company’s financial situation.

Ellison testified that she knew the lies would eventually catch up with her and expressed deep regret during her trial. “To all the victims and everyone I harmed directly and indirectly, I am so, so sorry,” she said while holding back tears during her sentencing in New York. She also admitted that her moral compass shifted during her time at Alameda, especially due to her emotional entanglement with Bankman-Fried.

Sentencing and Consequences

Judge Kaplan, who presided over the case, rejected the request from Ellison’s lawyers for leniency, arguing that the $11 billion fraud was too significant for her to avoid prison time.

He sentenced her to two years in a low-security prison near Boston where her family lives. He also ordered her to forfeit $11 billion, a sum she is unlikely to pay given her financial situation.

Her surrender date is set for after November 7.

Ellison’s cooperation with federal authorities was extensive. She met with government officials around 20 times to help prepare for Bankman-Fried’s trial. According to prosecutors, her testimony was critical in explaining the "what," "how," and "why" of the FTX fraud scheme. “The ‘what’ and ‘how’ of the crimes, as well as the ‘why,’ would have been difficult to prove without Ellison’s testimony,” they said.

Ongoing Cooperation with Authorities

Even after her guilty plea, Ellison has continued to cooperate with authorities. She assisted in a cryptocurrency-related investigation by the New York attorney general’s office and provided information to Justice Department prosecutors about others who may have been involved in the FTX fraud scheme.

At Bankman-Fried’s trial, Ellison did not shy away from discussing the intricacies of the fraudulent activities and her complicated relationship with her former boss.

She openly testified about how their secret romantic relationship added stress to both her personal and professional life.

In a digital file included in her sentencing submission, she expressed how her emotions were tied to her relationship with Bankman-Fried. “I think when Sam and I are sleeping together, or are in ‘flirty mode,’ I feel better about work and life, and don’t have the same negative spirals,” she wrote.

Despite her remorse, Ellison acknowledged that she played a significant role in misleading lenders and deceiving customers about the company’s financial health, contributing to one of the largest financial scandals in cryptocurrency history.
