A once-prominent political figure is now at the center of a devastating murder-suicide that has left a family shattered and a community in disbelief.

Former Virginia Lt. Gov. Justin Fairfax shot and killed his wife, Cerina Fairfax, inside their home before turning the gun on himself, police said, in a case authorities describe as a domestic dispute spiraling into deadly violence.

The couple’s two teenage children were inside the home when the shooting unfolded just after midnight Thursday in Annandale, Virginia. Their son made the frantic 911 call.

A FAMILY CRISIS TURNS DEADLY

Police arrived to find both Justin and Cerina Fairfax dead inside the home.

Authorities say the violence stemmed from an ongoing domestic conflict tied to what officials called a “complicated or messy divorce.” The shooting came just over two weeks after Cerina Fairfax was granted primary physical custody of the couple’s children.

Court records show she had filed for divorce on July 18, 2025, with the case still pending. A court order had also directed Justin Fairfax to appear on April 21.

"IT IS AN ABSOLUTE TRAGEDY"

Cerina Fairfax’s attorney, Amy Spain, described the loss in stark terms.

"It is an absolute tragedy that Cerina was taken from her children and family," she said, calling her a loving and devoted mother.

"leaves an immeasurable void in the lives of all who knew and loved her"

HOW THE SHOOTING UNFOLDED

Police say Justin Fairfax shot his wife multiple times in the basement before going upstairs to a bedroom, where he killed himself using the same firearm.

The couple, though separated, had continued living in the same home but in different bedrooms.

Dispatch audio captured the chaos as their son called for help.

"Caller stating that his dad might have stabbed his mom"

"lying on the ground bleeding"

Officers searching the home later found a man with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

"I think this is going to be our subject. He’s got a firearm with a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head"

CHILDREN LEFT BEHIND IN HORROR

The emotional toll is immense.

"So tragic for the children to lose both parents, extra tragic for them to actually be in the home when it occurred," said Fairfax County Police Chief Kevin Davis.

The children are now being cared for by relatives, with support services in place.

"Half of America probably goes through divorce proceedings at some point in time and very, very rarely, thankfully, does it ever end up like this"

WARNING SIGNS IN COURT RECORDS

Court documents reveal a troubling picture leading up to the tragedy.

A judge wrote that Fairfax struggled with alcohol use and had “cloistered himself” in isolation after leaving public office.

"Together, these facts paint a vivid picture of Father as a talented man who struggles with undefined emotional and psychological issues"

The court detailed years of personal setbacks, including a failed 2013 campaign and the fallout from 2019 sexual assault allegations.

"(T)he evidence established that father’s mental and emotional health has suffered materially and substantially"

The judge also noted heavy alcohol use and withdrawal from family life.

"heavy daily alcohol consumption by Father has become the norm"

Financial troubles compounded the situation, including unpaid debts and a mortgage falling into default.

A TROUBLING INCIDENT BEFORE THE KILLINGS

In 2022, Fairfax left home with a handgun, triggering a search before he was found in nearby woods.

"It is clear that Father was experiencing some kind of adverse psychological event"

He had been ordered to leave the family home by April 30 and undergo alcohol testing before visiting his children.

"There is no expectation or hope of reconciliation between the parties"

Cerina Fairfax had also alleged he failed to support the family financially.

FROM POLITICAL RISE TO DEVASTATING FALL

Fairfax once served as lieutenant governor under Ralph Northam and was seen as a rising Democratic figure, even running for governor in 2021.

His career unraveled after multiple sexual assault allegations surfaced in 2019, which he denied.

At the time, he had been viewed as an “ascendant political figure.”

Others are left grappling with the impact on the children.

Virginia Gov. Abigail Spanberger called it a sobering reminder of domestic violence risks.
