Scammers are raising the stakes and getting dangerously convincing. One Durham resident came within moments of losing $30,000 after being targeted by criminals posing as federal court officials, complete with what appeared to be a legitimate arrest warrant.

The Durham County Sheriff's Office says the victim received a call claiming they had failed to appear in federal court and now owed $30,000. While still on the phone, the scammer sent a document that looked official, filled with legal language and even an arrest warrant.

It looked real. But it was entirely fake.

Instead of panicking, the resident paused and contacted the Clerk of Courts directly. That decision stopped the scam in its tracks. Officials confirmed the warrant was fraudulent, preventing a devastating financial loss.

A Growing Threat Getting Harder to Detect

Durham County Sheriff Clarence F. Birkhead warns that scams like this are becoming increasingly sophisticated, with criminals exploiting trust and authority to pressure victims.

"Scammers are constantly evolving their tactics, often impersonating trusted organizations to trick you into giving them money or personal information," Birkhead said.

This incident reflects a much larger crisis. According to the Consumer Federation of America, Americans lose an estimated $119 billion every year to online scams. Nearly $3 billion of those losses come from schemes involving impersonation of government agencies.

Red Flags That Could Save You Thousands

Authorities stress that legitimate law enforcement agencies and courts will never demand immediate payment to avoid arrest. They also do not accept payment through gift cards, cryptocurrency, or wire transfers, which are the preferred methods for scammers.

Subtle errors can also expose fraud. In this case, the fake warrant included made up legal terms and even misspelled the word "surety" as "insurity."

AI Adds a Dangerous New Layer

Officials are also sounding the alarm about artificial intelligence being used to clone voices. A caller may sound like a real official or even someone familiar, making scams harder to detect.

"If a situation feels urgent or threatening, that's often a sign it's a scam," the sheriff's office said. "Scammers rely on panic to keep victims from verifying what they're being told."

Residents are urged to hang up and independently contact agencies using verified phone numbers if something feels off.

Protect Yourself Before It’s Too Late

Authorities emphasize never sharing Social Security numbers, bank details, or credit card information with unsolicited callers or messages.

Sheriff Birkhead is asking the public to spread the word, especially to older adults and those more vulnerable to financial scams.

"Your assistance helps us protect our community," he said.

Consumers can also report scams to the North Carolina Attorney General’s Office online.

The message from law enforcement is clear. Stay alert, verify everything, and never let urgency override caution.
