Felix Vail Murder Conviction: Inside the Oldest Serial Murder Prosecution in U.S. History

Felix Vail Murder

In a case that spanned more than half a century, the Felix Vail Murder conviction finally brought accountability for the 1962 killing of Mary Horton Vail. Nearly 54 years ago, Mary’s body was pulled from the dark waters of Louisiana’s Calcasieu River.

In 2016, a jury found her husband, Felix Vail, guilty of the murder and rejected his long-held claims that her death was an accidental drowning.

A Cold Case Murder That Refused to Die

The Felix Vail Murder case is now recognized as the oldest prosecution of a suspected serial killer in U.S. history. Mary Horton Vail was just 22 years old when she died in August 1962 while reportedly fishing with her husband. Felix Vail told deputies she fell from the boat while they were checking trotlines.

That explanation held for decades. But investigators, family members, and later prosecutors never stopped questioning how a young woman could drown under such suspicious circumstances—especially given what followed in Vail’s life.

Felix Vail was later linked to the disappearances of two more women: Sharon Hensley, who vanished in 1973, and Annette Craver Vail, his third wife, who disappeared in 1984 after inheriting nearly $100,000 and deeding two homes to him.

Forensic Evidence Changes the Narrative on Felix Vail Case

At trial in Lake Charles, Louisiana, forensic testimony played a decisive role in dismantling the accidental drowning claim at the heart of the Felix Vail Murder defense.

Two forensic pathologists for the prosecution, including renowned expert Dr. Michael Baden, concluded Mary Vail was already dead before entering the water. Baden emphasized the scarf found in her mouth and the nature of her injuries.

The original 1962 autopsy documented:

  • A four-inch hematoma on the back of her head
  • A four-inch bruise on her right calf
  • A two-inch bruise above her left knee

Defense pathologist Dr. James Traylor acknowledged Mary sustained the head injury before death, even while suggesting the injuries were not inconsistent with drowning.

Dr. Terry Welke, the coroner who reopened the case decades later, was unequivocal. “I am absolutely certain she was killed,” Welke testified, noting Mary was found face-up with crossed arms—unusual for drowning victims, who are typically recovered face-down.

Serial Murder Two Wives Still Missing

Prosecutors also presented testimony from three former friends who said Felix Vail admitted killing his wife. One witness, Bruce Biedebach, testified Vail told him he tried to use an oar during the incident, saying, “it didn’t work well.”

Adding to suspicion, a former Travelers Insurance employee testified that Felix Vail took out a life insurance policy on Mary shortly before her death—without her signature. Despite collecting the payout, Vail did not pay for her funeral, burial, or headstone.

Assistant District Attorney Hugo Holland posed a blunt question to jurors:

“What kind of man doesn’t pay the funeral bill for his wife?”

Holland also highlighted the improbability of three wives dying or disappearing under similar circumstances.

“He is either the most unlucky person born on the planet since Job,” Holland said, “or it is what it looks like—a killer who learned from his mistakes.”

Other Allegations Beyond Murder

The Felix Vail Murder case also exposed disturbing allegations unrelated to the homicide charge. Prosecutors confirmed Vail molested a child in Oklahoma, though the statute of limitations prevented prosecution.

The Clarion-Ledger previously reported that a private investigator found a photograph of a naked 3-year-old girl and journals discussing relationships with children inside Vail’s Texas home. Jurors did not hear all of this evidence, but prosecutors said it underscored a long pattern of predatory behavior.

Families Prayers Answered

For the families, the verdict marked the end of decades of anguish.

Annette Craver Vail’s mother, Mary Rose, who spent 32 years seeking justice, called the conviction “a prayer answered.”

“A dream come true that justice would be done and that he would be held accountable for the three young lives.”

Mary Vail’s brother, Will Horton, praised prosecutors and spoke of his nephew Bill, who died in 2009. Bill famously walked into a California police station at age eight and said his father told him he killed his mother.

Bill’s widow, Janet, said simply:

“Today he was heard.”

Felix Vail: Sentence and Legacy

Felix Vail was sentenced to life in prison without parole, meaning he will spend his 77th birthday behind bars. District Attorney John DeRosier said,

“Justice is being served today. I’m just honored to be a part of this process.”

Prosecutors believe there may still be other victims.
