Starlink is preparing to make one of its most significant operational adjustments to date, according to Michael Nicolls, the company’s Vice President of Engineering. In a move aimed squarely at improving orbital safety, Starlink will lower the orbits of roughly 4,400 satellites this year, reducing their altitude from around 500–550 kilometers to approximately 480 kilometers. 

The announcement underscores growing concerns about congestion in low Earth orbit and highlights how Starlink is adapting its constellation to reduce collision risks.

Michael Nicolls Outlines Starlink Safety Concerns

In a recent post on X, Michael Nicolls said the company is “beginning a significant reconfiguration of its satellite constellation.” Specifically, all Starlink satellites currently operating at an altitude of approximately 550 kilometers (342 miles) will be gradually lowered to about 480 kilometers (298 miles).

According to Nicolls, the change is designed to place satellites in a less crowded orbital band, where they can be more easily managed and deorbited if something goes wrong.

The announcement follows a recent Starlink satellite anomaly that resulted in debris being released in orbit. Starlink disclosed that the issue involved venting from a propulsion tank, which caused a rapid orbital decay and the release of “a small number of trackable low relatively velocity objects.”

Orbital tracking firm LeoLabs later assessed that the event was likely caused by “an internal energetic source rather than a collision with space debris or another object.”

Michael Nicolls Claims Launches Add to the Risk

The incident reinforced the importance of rapid deorbiting capabilities, especially as the number of satellites in low Earth orbit continues to rise.

Just days before the orbit-lowering announcement, Michael Nicolls publicly raised concerns about a near miss involving satellites launched from China. He noted that the satellites appeared to have been deployed with little to no coordination with existing satellite operators.

“With difficult-to-control risks such as uncoordinated maneuvers and launches by other satellite operators,” Nicolls explained, lowering Starlink satellites will further improve the safety of the constellation.”

Lower Orbits Will Improve Starlink Space Safety

Lowering Starlink’s satellites offers multiple safety benefits. A key factor is the upcoming solar minimum, expected in the early 2030s. 

During this phase of the Sun’s 11-year cycle, reduced solar activity leads to lower atmospheric density at higher altitudes, meaning satellites take far longer to naturally decay.

“As solar minimum approaches, atmospheric density decreases,” Nicolls wrote. “Lowering will mean a >80% reduction in ballistic decay time in solar minimum, or 4+ years reduced to a few months.”

Starlink Is a Massive Constellation 

The Starlink constellation now includes nearly 9,300 active satellites, accounting for roughly 65 percent of all operational spacecraft in orbit. More than 3,000 satellites were launched this year alone, across 121 SpaceX missions, averaging nearly one launch every three days.
