WASHINGTON - Katie Zacharia’s remarkable tenure as White House press secretary is over almost as quickly as it began.

A White House official confirmed Friday that Zacharia had been let go only days after assuming the position. President Donald Trump offered her the job on Friday, October 9; she began work Monday, delivered her only briefing Tuesday, and was out by Friday.

Hours before news of her dismissal emerged, Trump effectively opened the door.

“The news has been so nasty to her,” Trump told reporters, explaining that he had told Zacharia that, in her position, he would reconsider taking the job. Trump also referenced her husband and family while questioning whether she needed the pressure that came with the position. The Washington Post

That account is important because it paints a more complicated picture than a simple firing. Trump publicly criticized Zacharia’s treatment by the press while simultaneously signaling that the arrangement was not working.

And the warning signs came quickly.

Zacharia’s first briefing lasted roughly 14 minutes and included questions from only three news organizations. Just two days earlier, the White House itself had described the appearance as a “commanding inaugural press briefing.” The White House

Then came the controversy over her legal credentials. Trump had introduced Zacharia as an attorney. Zacharia subsequently confirmed that she graduated from Pepperdine Law School but did not pass the California bar examination and never obtained a U.S. law license. USA Herald

There is another part of Zacharia’s background that deserves more examination.

After law school, she moved to China and worked in the international practice division of Zhong Lun Law Firm, one of China’s major law firms. Zacharia has described herself as handling the English-language side of international transactional matters alongside Chinese counterparts. She lived in China with her husband from approximately 2011 to 2013. Human Events

Those facts do not, by themselves, establish wrongdoing or an improper foreign relationship. But for the chief spokesperson of the United States government — a position involving daily exposure to sensitive policy, national-security matters and senior administration officials — they are legitimate vetting subjects.

The bigger question may therefore be how thoroughly Zacharia was vetted before Trump offered her the job.

Her own account suggests an exceptionally compressed process. On Thursday night, Zacharia told Fox News she had been on the job for less than eight hours when she walked into the briefing room and received her briefing materials only that morning. Fox News

The Washington Post also reported that Trump approached Zacharia about the position without first consulting Chief of Staff Susie Wiles — an unusual detail that strengthens the appearance of a rapid appointment process. The Washington Post

Five days later, it was over.

The lesson from Zacharia’s brief tenure may reach beyond one disastrous week at the podium. When the White House spokesman becomes the story, questions about credentials, foreign professional history and the government’s own vetting process can overwhelm the message that person was hired to deliver.
