The suspect in a firebombing attack targeting a pro-Israeli hostage awareness march in Boulder, Colorado, is now facing first-degree murder charges. One of the victims, 82-year-old Karen Diamond, succumbed to her injuries.

The Boulder District Attorney's Office announced the upgraded charges on Monday, marking a grim development in the case that has shaken the local and national Jewish community.

Charges Upgraded Following Victim’s Death

Diamond died from severe injuries sustained during the June 1 attack, which occurred during a “Run For Their Lives” event meant to raise awareness about Israeli hostages held by Hamas.

Initially charged with attempted murder, suspect Mohamed Soliman now faces two counts of first-degree murder: one under the theory of extreme indifference, and one for murder with intent after deliberation.

In a press release, Boulder DA Michael Dougherty claimed, "This horrific attack has now claimed the life of an innocent person who was beloved by her family and friends. Our office will fight for justice for the victims, their loved ones, and the community."

A Growing List of Victims

According to prosecutors, Soliman used Molotov cocktails during the attack and carried a backpack weed sprayer and containers filled with flammable liquid. Authorities have identified 29 total victims so far, including 13 with physical injuries. Charges have expanded to include 66 additional counts, reflecting the scope of the violence.

Soliman is also facing 12 federal hate crime charges and has entered a plea of not guilty. The FBI and Boulder Police Department are conducting the investigation, while the U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Colorado and the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division are leading the federal prosecution.

Firebombing Attack Community Mourns

The organizers of Run for Their Lives posted a heartfelt message on social media following the news of Diamond’s death:

“We are deeply saddened to share the news of the death of Karen Diamond due to injuries sustained at the June 1 terror attack. May her memory always be a blessing… We are all of us holding Karen and her family in our hearts.”

DA Dougherty added, "Part of what makes Colorado special is that people come together in response to a tragedy; I know that the community will continue to unite in supporting the Diamond family and all the victims of this attack."

Soliman’s next court appearance for state charges is scheduled for July 15 in Boulder County Court.
