How does a wound from a beach vacation turn fatal within 48 hours? Louisiana health officials are confronting that question five times over this year alone.

State health officials confirmed August 6 that five people have died in Louisiana in 2026 after contracting infections from Vibrio vulnificus, a bacterium so aggressive at destroying skin and soft tissue that it has earned the nickname "flesh-eating bacteria." A total of nine cases have been reported statewide so far this year, according to the Louisiana Department of Health — and every single one followed the same pattern: a patient with an existing health condition, an open wound, and exposure to seawater.

A Number Already Above Average

Context is what makes Louisiana's 2026 numbers alarming rather than merely tragic. Over the same period across the previous 10 years, the state averaged just seven cases and one death annually. This year has already matched the full-year case average — in early August, with the bacterium's peak season still underway.

Health officials pointed to warming coastal waters as the likely driver. Vibrio vulnificus thrives in salt water and brackish water — the mixing zones where rivers meet the ocean — and its presence increases as water temperatures climb, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The bacterium is most concentrated from May through October, meaning Louisiana's outbreak numbers could still climb before the season winds down.

Louisiana isn't alone. Florida recently confirmed its second Vibrio vulnificus death of the year, and Alabama's Mobile County Health Department has logged 10 vibriosis cases in 2026, while Mississippi has reported two.

How an Infection Turns Deadly So Fast

What makes Vibrio vulnificus particularly dangerous isn't just where it lives — it's how quickly it moves once it finds a way into the body.

An infection can progress into necrotizing fasciitis, a fast-spreading bacterial infection of the tissue beneath the skin that, true to the bacterium's nickname, appears to consume the body's soft tissue as it spreads. From there, the progression can be brutal: tissue damage, spreading blisters, dangerously low blood pressure, fever, organ damage and sepsis, any of which can prove fatal.

The CDC's numbers underline just how serious this infection is once it takes hold. Many patients require intensive care or limb amputation to survive, and roughly 1 in 5 people who contract the infection die — sometimes within a day or two of first getting sick.

Not Just a Swimming Risk

While seawater exposure through open wounds accounts for Louisiana's cases this year, it isn't the only route to infection. The CDC notes that Vibrio vulnificus can also be contracted by eating raw or undercooked seafood, particularly oysters. Case numbers can also spike after tropical storms and hurricanes, when storm surge pushes seawater into freshwater environments that wouldn't normally carry the bacterium.

Not every Vibrio infection is created equal. Vibrio vulnificus causes what the Cleveland Clinic describes as the most serious form of vibriosis, while a different strain of Vibrio bacteria is responsible for cholera.

And the geographic footprint is wider than the Gulf Coast. Health authorities have documented evidence of the bacterium in coastal waters as far north as Connecticut, Maryland, New Jersey, New York and North Carolina — a reminder that warming waters are redrawing the map of where this risk exists.

The Warning Signs — and How Fast They Appear

Symptoms typically surface fast, often within 24 hours of exposure, according to the CDC, the Cleveland Clinic and Louisiana health officials. That speed is exactly why early recognition matters. Warning signs include:

• Fever and chills
• A red, warm or swollen patch of skin that spreads quickly and causes pain
• Fluid-filled blisters and skin discoloration
• Nausea, vomiting and diarrhea
• Low blood pressure, often showing up as weakness, dizziness, fatigue or fainting
• Confusion or an altered mental state
• Rapid heartbeat

What Health Officials Are Telling Beachgoers

With peak season still ahead, Louisiana officials are urging residents and visitors to take the risk seriously — particularly anyone with an open wound, no matter how minor.

For anyone entering salt water or brackish water, the guidance is direct: avoid the water entirely if you have any open wound, including recent surgical sites, fresh tattoos or piercings, or even a small cut or scrape. If contact with coastal water or raw seafood is possible, cover exposed skin with a waterproof bandage beforehand — exposure can happen even during storm-related flooding, not just intentional swimming. Afterward, wash any exposed skin immediately with soap and running water. People at higher risk — including those with weakened immune systems or conditions like liver disease, diabetes or kidney failure — should wear protective shoes and clothing in or near coastal waters.

The CDC's guidance for seafood consumption is equally direct: cook oysters and other seafood thoroughly before eating, clean any surface that comes into contact with raw seafood, and wash hands thoroughly after handling it — wearing gloves if you're in a higher-risk group.

A Season That Isn't Over Yet

With water temperatures still climbing through late summer, Louisiana's case count is unlikely to be final. What officials do know is that the pattern behind all nine of this year's cases — an existing health condition, an open wound, and a trip into the water — is entirely preventable with the right precautions, even if the bacterium itself is nearly impossible to eliminate from the coastline it calls home.
