A former FedEx delivery driver was sentenced to death on Tuesday for the horrific kidnapping and murder of seven-year-old Athena Strand in Texas — a crime that shocked the nation and left a family with an emptiness that can never be filled.

Tanner Horner pleaded guilty last month to capital murder and aggravated kidnapping. After a weeks-long trial that included heartbreaking evidence — including an audio recording of the young girl’s final moments inside his delivery vehicle — a jury unanimously chose the ultimate punishment: death by lethal injection.

Horner showed no visible reaction as the judge read his fate in court.

A Christmas Delivery Turned into Tragedy

On November 30, 2022, Horner was delivering a Christmas gift — a box of Barbie dolls — to the Strand family home near Fort Worth when he kidnapped Athena. Her body was discovered just two days later, not far from the property.

The case exposed serious questions about how Horner was hired in the first place. The family filed a lawsuit against Horner, FedEx, and contractor Big TopSpin Inc, alleging that proper background checks were never conducted.

Speaking after the sentencing, Athena’s uncle, Elijah Strand, delivered a powerful message to the killer:

“There are no words that truly capture the devastation that Tanner Horner caused us and our family.”

In a direct address to Horner in court, Elijah said:

“You destroyed a family. You will feel the wrath of God. I want you to know that you are nothing. You are a footnote in Athena’s story. Her name will forever be remembered, her name will forever be celebrated, and everyone will forget you.”
