From Prom Night to the Audition Room: Why Ariana Grande’s “Petal” Feels Like Carrie’s Revenge, 50 Years Later

Inside This Report

  • Ariana Grande's "Petal" video ends with her character, Pepper, drenched in blood after turning a chainsaw on a room of dismissive industry executives.
  • The imagery echoes the climactic prom scene in 1976'sCarrie, where blood transforms a bullied outsider into an avenger.
  • Critics and fans are split on whether the video is empowering satire or something darker — and the debate says as much about pop culture's appetite for shock as it does about Grande herself.

There's a moment forty-nine years ago that horror fans still talk about like it happened last week: a girl in a pink dress, standing on a stage, drenched head to toe in pig's blood. Brian De Palma's Carrie turned that image into shorthand for a very specific kind of transformation — humiliation curdling into power, victimhood giving way to something the audience isn't quite sure whether to cheer for or recoil from.

Watch Ariana Grande's new video for "Petal," the title track from her eighth studio album, and it's hard not to hear an echo of that same register.

The Setup: An Audition, and a Breaking Point

Directed by longtime Grande collaborator Christian Breslauer, the video casts the singer as Pepper, an actor auditioning again and again for a panel of executives who dismiss her as unremarkable, difficult, and unmarketable. The rejection piles up across the video's six-and-a-half-minute runtime — considerably longer than the song itself — until Pepper stops absorbing the insults and starts a chainsaw instead. What follows is a stylized, almost operatic sequence of violence against the men who spent the video tearing her down, ending with Pepper calmly walking out of the room soaked in blood, to the visible admiration of the women waiting for their own auditions.

It's a sequence that trades in exactly the symbolism Carrie built its reputation on: blood as release, as retribution, as proof that the person everyone underestimated was more than capable of striking back. Where Carrie White's power was supernatural, Pepper's is closer to catharsis — a fantasy of finally answering an industry that spent the whole video telling her she wasn't enough.

A Visual Language Audiences Already Know

Grande isn't inventing this symbolism from scratch, and that's part of what makes the comparison land. Horror has used blood-drenched women as a shorthand for rage and reclaimed power for half a century, and Carrie remains the reference point the genre keeps returning to. What's notable about "Petal" is how deliberately it borrows that grammar for a pop audience that may have never seen the original film — repackaging a horror archetype as a statement about the entertainment industry's treatment of women who don't play along.

The choice has proven divisive. Some viewers have read the video as a pointed, even cathartic piece of satire about the way young women in entertainment are picked apart and dismissed. Others have focused less on the metaphor and more on the imagery itself, with a vocal contingent online describing the aesthetic as excessive or, in more extreme corners of social media, invoking language about "demonic" or "satanic" symbolism — criticism that has followed Grande before and shows little sign of fading with this release.

Why the Comparison Matters

What makes the Carrie parallel more than a stylistic footnote is the throughline both stories share: a woman punished for not conforming, who is finally granted a moment where the blood on her isn't a mark of shame but a mark of power. Carrie White never asked to be humiliated at prom. Pepper never asked to be told she wasn't good enough, over and over, by men who held her career in their hands. Both stories resolve the same tension — public degradation answered by a burst of righteous, blood-soaked defiance — even if one ends in tragedy and the other in a room full of applauding women.

Whether audiences read "Petal" as empowerment, provocation, or simply the latest example of pop's ongoing fascination with horror aesthetics, the comparison to Carrie isn't a stretch. It may be the whole point.
