General Motors says it is on track to receive about $500 million in tariff refunds after the U.S. Supreme Court struck down the legal authority behind certain import duties, a reversal that is now reshaping corporate balance sheets across American industry.

The automaker disclosed the expected refund Monday while reporting its first-quarter results, also lifting its full-year profit outlook by the same amount. GM Chief Executive Mary Barra outlined the update in a shareholder letter, pointing to both the tariff windfall and continued strength in demand for its full-size pickup trucks, even as fuel prices remain elevated.

Supreme Court Decision Triggers Massive Refund Wave

The financial boost stems from a February Supreme Court ruling that determined the International Emergency Economic Powers Act did not authorize the broad tariff measures imposed during the Trump administration.

Following that decision, the federal government opened a refund application portal last week, allowing affected companies to seek repayment of duties already paid.

GM is among more than 330,000 importers that were subject to the now-invalidated tariffs, which collectively totaled about $166 billion in payments.

The impact of the tariff reversal stretches far beyond corporate earnings statements. According to the nonpartisan Tax Foundation, the now-overturned IEEPA tariffs cost the average U.S. household roughly $700 last year alone.
