Saint Augustine’s University, one of the nation’s oldest historically Black colleges and universities, has entered Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, marking a dramatic financial and institutional crossroads for the Raleigh-based school.

The university’s board of directors unanimously approved the voluntary filing earlier this month, according to court documents. The move places the institution under federal bankruptcy protection as it attempts to stabilize operations and restructure mounting financial pressures.

Court filings show estimated liabilities between $50 million and $100 million, with assets ranging from $100 million to $500 million. The scale of the imbalance underscores the severity of the university’s fiscal challenges.

Financial Pressures Mount as Creditor Debt and IRS Obligations Rise

According to the bankruptcy petition, Saint Augustine’s University reports between 200 and 999 creditors. Among its obligations is $14.4 million owed to the Internal Revenue Service.

The filing does not signal immediate closure, but rather a legal restructuring process designed to reorganize debt while the university continues operating.

In a statement, the university described the bankruptcy as a strategic, voluntary step aimed at long-term recovery.

Officials said the goal is to “strengthen its financial foundation” and rebuild stability after years of escalating financial strain.

Accreditation Battle Paused as University Shifts Strategy

One of the most consequential changes tied to the bankruptcy is the university’s decision to abandon ongoing litigation over its accreditation status.

After more than two years of legal disputes aimed at preserving accreditation, the school said it will no longer pursue court challenges.

“After careful evaluation, the Board determined that continuing litigation would not be a prudent use of resources,” the university said in a statement.

Instead, leadership plans to redirect efforts toward student support, including teach-out agreements, development of non-degree certificate programs, and apprenticeship pathways while working toward eventual reaccreditation.

The shift marks a pivot from courtroom defense to institutional rebuilding.

Leadership Transition and Operational Uncertainty

The university also confirmed a leadership change amid the financial restructuring. Interim President Dr. Jennie Ward Robinson has stepped down and will be replaced by Dr. Verjanis Peoples, who will serve as interim president.

The transition comes as the institution attempts to steady its operations during one of the most turbulent chapters in its long history.

Despite the challenges, Saint Augustine’s had previously secured a court injunction in August that allowed it to maintain accreditation temporarily and continue offering classes into the fall semester.
