More than five decades after a Utah teenager was found dead, advances in DNA testing have linked notorious serial killer Ted Bundy to her murder, authorities announced Tuesday, adding another confirmed victim to the growing record of crimes attributed to him.

Investigators now say they are satisfied that Bundy killed Melissa Ann Smith, 17, in 1974. Her death had remained an unsolved cold case for decades, with crucial evidence ultimately providing the breakthrough that investigators needed.

Although Bundy was executed in 1989, the investigation into his crimes continues. Modern forensic technology is helping authorities revisit old cases, turning evidence once unable to deliver answers into a powerful tool for identifying victims' killers.

The latest development underscores how a case can remain dormant for generations before scientific advances uncover evidence that changes what investigators know about the past.

DNA Evidence Connects Bundy to Melissa Ann Smith's Murder

The Summit County prosecutor's office in Utah said investigators concluded that Bundy was responsible for Smith's death after examining DNA evidence connected to the teenager's case.

According to officials, investigators had identified similarities between Smith's murder and the killing of Laura Aime, another Bundy victim. Sergeant Mike Reynolds of the Utah County Sheriff's Office participated in the investigation that helped establish the connection.

The breakthrough involved DNA recovered from another victim that matched evidence associated with Smith's body. Investigators identified a highly similar DNA profile in material obtained during Smith's autopsy, helping connect the cases.

The genetic evidence included a Y-chromosome DNA profile, a type of genetic marker found in males. Such evidence can help investigators narrow the field of possible suspects and establish links between separate criminal investigations.

Utah County officials presented the DNA evidence to the Summit County Sheriff's Office on Oct. 7, bringing investigators closer to resolving a case that had remained open for more than 50 years.

Officials Stress the Importance of Preserving Evidence

The discovery highlights the lasting value of forensic evidence, particularly in investigations that outlive the original investigators and witnesses.

Salt Lake County Sheriff Rosie Rivera emphasized that the case demonstrates why evidence must be preserved, even when a murder appears unlikely to be solved.

“This case demonstrates the importance of preserving evidence,” Rivera said.

In cold cases, physical evidence can become the bridge between an unanswered question and a long-awaited conclusion. As DNA analysis has advanced, investigators have gained new opportunities to reexamine biological material collected decades earlier.

The Smith investigation offers another example of how technology can breathe new life into cases that once seemed beyond resolution.

Authorities have also contacted Smith's next of kin to inform them of the development. None of her relatives contacted by officials still lives in the area.

Investigators Hope to Close the Chapter on Bundy's Crimes

Reynolds said resolving another case associated with Bundy carries significance beyond the investigation itself.

“With every case closure, may we stomp the memory of Ted Bundy out,” Reynolds said.

His remarks reflect the continuing effort to establish the facts surrounding Bundy's crimes and bring clarity to cases that remained unresolved long after his death.

While Bundy was convicted of multiple murders during his lifetime, investigators have continued examining other suspected killings, using confessions, surviving evidence and modern forensic methods to determine which cases can be conclusively linked to him.

Ted Bundy's Confirmed Victim Count Continues to Grow

Bundy remains one of the most notorious serial killers in American criminal history. Authorities have attributed at least 30 murders to him, involving women and girls across several states during the 1970s.

His crimes extended beyond those who were killed. Numerous women escaped his attacks or survived with injuries, leaving a wider trail of victims whose experiences became part of the investigation into his violent activities.

The newly confirmed connection to Smith adds another case to the record, illustrating how the full scope of a serial killer's crimes can remain uncertain for decades.

Even after Bundy's execution, the investigation has continued through the painstaking review of old evidence. Each new confirmation can help families understand what happened to loved ones and give investigators a more complete account of crimes that once appeared disconnected.

However, not every suspected case has been conclusively resolved, and authorities continue to distinguish between established findings and allegations that lack sufficient evidence.

Bundy's Final Confessions Left Questions Unanswered

Bundy was executed by electric chair in Florida in 1989 after being convicted of murdering two women at the Chi Omega sorority house at Florida State University in 1978.

In the final days before his execution, he gave a series of confessions that included details about crimes previously unknown to police. Those statements offered investigators new leads, but they did not resolve every suspected case.

Some of the crimes Bundy discussed have never been independently confirmed, leaving investigators with questions that remain unanswered decades later.

That uncertainty makes forensic breakthroughs especially important. A confession may point investigators in a particular direction, but physical evidence can provide the corroboration needed to establish a reliable connection between a suspect and a specific killing.

The DNA findings in Smith's case now provide authorities with a new level of certainty about her death.

A Cold Case Reaches a Long-Awaited Turning Point

For Melissa Ann Smith's case, the announcement marks a significant shift after more than 50 years without a definitive resolution.

The investigation demonstrates that the passage of time does not necessarily erase the possibility of finding answers. Evidence preserved through decades can become newly informative when scientific techniques evolve, allowing investigators to revisit questions that once seemed impossible to settle.

For authorities, the case adds another confirmed killing to Bundy's record. For Smith's surviving relatives, the findings offer information about a tragedy that had remained unresolved for generations.

And for investigators examining other suspected Bundy crimes, the development serves as a reminder that old evidence may still hold answers.

Bundy has been dead for more than three decades, but the forensic trail left behind continues to reshape the historical record of his crimes. In Smith's case, a scientific breakthrough has finally brought a decades-old mystery closer to closure.
