An open field can hold very different meanings for the people occupying it — for one man, it was a hunting ground; for a woman walking through it, it should have simply been a path home. Those two realities collided fatally Friday evening, leading to the arrest of a Salisbury man on manslaughter charges following a deadly shooting in Ellendale.

The Moment Everything Changed

According to Delaware State Police, troopers responded around 7:40 p.m. on Sept. 18 after a woman was shot in an open field near South Old State Road, just north of East Robbins Road. Troopers provided life-saving medical care at the scene before rushing the victim to a nearby hospital — a race against time that ultimately fell short.

The Victim Identified

The woman, 39 years old and from Georgetown, was pronounced dead at the hospital. Authorities are withholding her name until family members can be properly notified — a painful formality that leaves the community grieving a person they can't yet name.

Identifying the Shooter

At the scene, troopers made contact with 74-year-old Walter Moorhead and determined he had fired the shot that struck the victim. Moorhead was taken into custody, and the case was subsequently handed over to the DSP Homicide Unit for further investigation.

How the Tragedy Unfolded

According to police, the victim was walking through the field alongside a man and two children at the time of the shooting. Moorhead, meanwhile, was hunting deer from a ground blind nearby — a common and typically safe hunting setup that, on this occasion, led to catastrophic misjudgment. Police say Moorhead believed he had spotted a deer and fired his rifle, striking the woman instead.

A Split-Second Mistake With Permanent Consequences

The gap between perceiving a deer and encountering a person can sometimes collapse into a single instant, and that appears to be exactly what happened here — a hunter's split-second decision, made in what he believed was a clear shot, instead ending a woman's life as she simply walked through the same field.

Charges and Release

Moorhead was charged in connection with the shooting and was subsequently released after posting a $43,000 cash bond — a financial condition that allows him to remain free while the case moves through the legal system.

For a community now grappling with the loss of a 39-year-old woman in what should have been an ordinary walk through an open field, this incident stands as a sobering reminder of how quickly a hunting ground and a walking path can become the same dangerous space.
