Judge Robert Wayne Guy, a Superior Court jurist from Georgia’s Brunswick Judicial Circuit and former head of the state’s Council of Superior Court Judges, resigned from his position Thursday after being arrested for driving under the influence outside a Jacksonville, Florida, strip club.

Guy, who was first elected in 2016, submitted his resignation to Governor Brian Kemp. “It has been an honor and a privilege to serve the 5 county Brunswick Judicial Circuit,” he wrote in his resignation letter. “I will be forever grateful to my judicial friends in this circuit and across the state. I appreciate my remarkable staff and courthouse personnel and the attorneys and their zealous advocacy for their clients.”

Jacksonville police charged Guy with three DUI-related misdemeanors following an incident on October 7. According to authorities, Guy backed his vehicle into a pickup truck while attempting to leave Wacko’s Gentlemen’s Club and refused to take an alcohol test. Officers were dispatched to the scene around 3 a.m. after reports of a collision. A valet told police he had seen Guy trying to drive away an hour earlier but that the judge was too intoxicated to leave.

The arrest report stated that Guy offered the driver of the damaged Ford F-150 $500 to cover the damage instead of exchanging information. When officers approached him, they observed signs of intoxication, including a strong odor of alcohol, slurred speech, and red, watery eyes. Guy reportedly stumbled during a field sobriety test before being taken into custody.

He was released on a $3,000 bond after entering a plea of not guilty to charges of driving under the influence, property damage while under the influence, and refusing a DUI test.

The Georgia Judicial Qualifications Commission confirmed it has opened an investigation into the incident. Guy’s attorney, S. Lester Tate III of Akin & Tate, could not be reached for comment on Friday.
