Astronomers Discover the Most Pristine Giant Red Star in the Universe

Giant red star

Astronomers have identified what they believe to be the purest and most pristine object in the universe — a giant red star known as SDSS J0715-7334, located approximately 79,256 light-years from the Sun. The discovery, led by Alexander Ji of the University of Chicago, provides an extraordinary window into the first generation of stars formed shortly after the Big Bang.

A Giant Red Star Frozen in Time

Described in a new preprint paper titled "A nearly pristine star from the Large Magellanic Cloud", the star is believed to have remained chemically untouched since the early universe, offering rare insight into the conditions that birthed the cosmos.

“This star has the most pristine composition of any object known in the universe,” Ji and his team wrote. “It represents a direct descendant of the first generation of stars.”

For additional details, see the ScienceAlert report.

Born in Another Galaxy, Living Now in the Milky Way

SDSS J0715-7334 is not originally from our galaxy. It formed in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) — a dwarf galaxy about 163,000 light-years from the Milky Way — before migrating into our galaxy’s outer halo. The team referred to it as a “galactic immigrant.”

The red giant’s mass is estimated at 2,900% that of the Sun, making it both massive and ancient. Astronomers have found no evidence of exoplanets in the system so far.

“The first stars formed out of pristine gas, causing them to be so massive that none are expected to have survived until today,” Ji’s team noted. “If their descendants were sufficiently low-mass, they could exist today — recognizable by their extremely low metallicity.”

The Most Metal-Poor Star Ever Found

What makes this giant red star exceptional is its lack of heavy elements, or “metals.” It contains only 0.8 parts per million of heavy elements, making it 20,000 times purer than the Sun.

In astrophysics, the term metallicity refers to the presence of elements heavier than hydrogen and helium. A star’s metallicity helps scientists determine when it formed. The lower the metallicity, the closer the star is to the dawn of the universe.

“Its existence suggests that certain parts of the universe allowed stars to cool without relying on elements like carbon,” Ji explained.

The discovery challenges prior theories that all early-generation stars — known as Population III stars — were too massive to survive billions of years. The fact that SDSS J0715-7334 still exists may indicate that low-mass, metal-free stars can persist far longer than previously believed.

A Rare Glimpse into Cosmic Origins

The find adds a new chapter to our understanding of the early universe, offering evidence that not all first-generation stars perished in supernova explosions. Instead, some, like SDSS J0715-7334, may have lived quietly for billions of years, preserving the elemental signature of the cosmos’ birth.
