In a powerful sign of America’s push to strengthen its defense industrial base, General Motors has announced a major new partnership with aerospace and defense giant Lockheed Martin to dramatically scale manufacturing capabilities and boost production of critical military systems.

The collaboration, facilitated by the U.S. Department of Defense, will focus on munitions and other high-priority areas, combining GM’s legendary manufacturing expertise with Lockheed’s advanced technology and systems integration.

“What makes this moment especially important is that the country needs more than great technology. It also needs the capacity to build, scale and deliver reliably,” said Bruce Brown, GM’s vice president of strategy at GM Defense. “This is where GM can help.”

Lockheed Martin COO Frank St. John echoed the sentiment, noting the partnership will explore opportunities in production readiness, supply chain resilience, and advanced manufacturing techniques.

This unexpected alliance between one of America’s iconic automakers and its premier defense contractor signals a serious effort to rebuild and modernize the nation’s ability to produce weapons and equipment at scale — especially as global conflicts in Ukraine and Iran have strained U.S. stockpiles. GM, which famously built tanks and other military vehicles during World War II, is once again stepping up through its growing GM Defense division.

The deal comes as President Trump has repeatedly called for increased domestic manufacturing and reshoring of critical production. Both companies are making significant investments — Lockheed committing $9 billion through 2030 to modernize facilities, and GM planning $7 billion in U.S. research and development.

While still in the early stages under a memorandum of understanding, the partnership could lead to faster production timelines, more resilient supply chains, and innovative approaches to meeting the Pentagon’s urgent demands.

For GM, this expands its footprint beyond civilian vehicles into a high-stakes, high-reward sector. For Lockheed, it brings in a partner with proven expertise in high-volume manufacturing. Together, they may help address one of the U.S. military’s most pressing challenges: the ability to produce and sustain weapons systems during prolonged conflicts.
