Some birthdays come with cake; Google's comes with a homepage makeover. The tech giant is celebrating its 28th birthday today, Sept. 27, 2026, marking another year since a scrappy startup idea transformed into one of the most influential companies on the planet. To mark the occasion, Google has featured a special Doodle on its homepage, showcasing a nostalgic version of its early logo as a visual love letter to its own origin story.

A Birthday Rooted in an Uncertain Date

Google was officially incorporated on Sept. 4, 1998, by Larry Page and Sergey Brin, who at the time were simply PhD students at Stanford University chasing an idea rather than tech titans in the making.

The $100,000 Check That Started It All

According to official information shared by Google, the company's real origin story traces back to August 1998, when Sun Microsystems co-founder Andy Bechtolsheim wrote a $100,000 check to Page and Brin — a single, almost casual gesture that formally set Google Inc. into motion before the company even had proper office space to cash it in.

Why September 27, Specifically?

The reasoning behind celebrating on Sept. 27 remains somewhat murky, and even Google itself has shifted the date over the years. In the early 2000s, the company marked its birthday on various dates throughout September, likely tied to early milestones or public announcements rather than any single, definitive founding moment.

A Date That Finally Stuck

Since 2006, though, Sept. 27 has remained the consistent choice, possibly commemorating a major achievement in web indexing that occurred around that same period — though Google hasn't offered a crisp, singular explanation nailing down exactly why this date, of all the possible contenders, became the permanent one.

From Search Engine to Global Powerhouse

Regardless of which date it settles on, Google uses this annual celebration as a moment to reflect on just how far the company has traveled. What began as a single search engine has since ballooned into a sprawling global technology powerhouse, encompassing products like Gmail, YouTube, Google Maps, Android and Pixel phones — a portfolio far removed from the simple search box that started it all.

Still Pushing Into New Frontiers

Google's evolution hasn't slowed with age. The company continues pushing deeper into artificial intelligence through its Gemini platform, chasing the next major technological wave much the way it once chased better search results decades ago. Today, Google operates under its parent company, Alphabet Inc., which was formed in 2015 specifically to manage the ever-expanding range of services the original search engine eventually spawned.

For a company that began as little more than a research project between two graduate students and a generous check, 28 years later, Google's birthday serves as a reminder of just how dramatically a simple idea can reshape the world once it's given room to grow.
