Gordie Howe Bridge to Open on July 27 After Trump Secures New Toll Deal With Canada

Gordie Howe Bridge to open on July 27

Named for a hockey legend who won four Stanley Cups and skated through an entire era of greatness, the Gordie Howe International Bridge is finally ready to carry something more than symbolism across the Detroit River. The United States and Canada announced Friday they have resolved the dispute that delayed the bridge's launch, setting July 27 as the official opening date for the multibillion-dollar international crossing that will physically connect Detroit and Windsor, Ontario, for the first time in a new generation of cross-border infrastructure.

The 1.5-mile span — originally scheduled to open last month before diplomatic friction brought it to a halt — will become the fourth crossing between Detroit and Canada when it opens later this month, and it arrives bearing the imprint of a renegotiated financial arrangement that President Donald Trump announced Saturday morning on Truth Social with characteristic self-congratulation.

"I was able to cut a MUCH BETTER DEAL for America," Trump wrote.

From Standoff to Deal: What Changed

The bridge's path to opening has been anything but smooth. Earlier this year, Trump publicly threatened to block the span's launch entirely unless the United States secured an ownership stake in the project — a demand that injected bilateral tension into what had been a straightforward infrastructure completion. The Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority announced June 11 that the two countries had agreed to delay the opening to "resolve any outstanding issues," diplomatic language that concealed a genuine impasse over money, ownership, and control.

The original financial arrangement for the bridge was constructed with Canada bearing the entire construction cost — approximately 6.4 billion Canadian dollars — in exchange for receiving all toll revenue until that investment was fully recovered. Construction began in 2018 under that agreement. Trump declared the original deal "unacceptable to me" in his Saturday post, framing the renegotiation as a necessary correction to terms that shortchanged American interests.

The New Terms: Profit Sharing and Toll Oversight

The revised agreement, announced Friday by the Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority, centers on a "series of cooperative measures" related to toll-charging and revenue distribution. According to a Canadian official cited by the Wall Street Journal, the two sides agreed that half of the net profit generated by the bridge will be directed to a regional development fund — a structural change from the original arrangement that gave Canada sole claim to toll revenues until its construction costs were recouped.

The new deal also gives the United States meaningful oversight of toll adjustments. The bridge authority will now require US approval before raising tolls by 10% or more, and will similarly need approval before cutting tolls below the rates charged at comparable crossings — specifically, the Ambassador Bridge, the existing span that has handled the bulk of US-Canada automotive and commercial traffic for decades.

Trump, embracing the outcome with the enthusiasm of a negotiator declaring victory, extended an olive branch to Ottawa in his Truth Social post. "The new deal is great, and fair. Thank you and congratulations to the Canadian Government. May we both have many years of success with this wonderful new development!!!"

Michigan's Governor Celebrates — Without Mentioning Trump

While the White House framed the resolution as a product of presidential pressure, Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer claimed her own share of the credit — conspicuously without uttering the president's name. In a statement Friday, Whitmer celebrated the bridge opening as a victory for the Michigan workers who built it and the state economy it will serve.

"Thousands of Michigan workers built this critical bridge, which will speed up auto production, lower costs, ease traffic, strengthen agriculture and give people on both sides of the border better-paying jobs and brighter futures," Whitmer said. The bridge is co-owned by Michigan and Canada under the existing framework.

"I'm proud to have fought for its opening and congratulate my partners who have worked on this issue alongside me for years," she added — a statement that carved out space for the Democratic governor to celebrate a bipartisan infrastructure achievement without crediting the Republican administration she has frequently clashed with.

Fox News Digital said it had reached out to the White House, the Canadian Prime Minister's Office, and the bridge authority for comment on the specific terms of the revised deal. The full text of the new agreement had not been made publicly available as of the announcement.

The Man Behind the Name

The bridge's namesake, Gordie Howe, is among the most celebrated figures in the history of North American hockey — a Canadian-born player who became the defining face of the Detroit Red Wings franchise, winning four Stanley Cup championships during the 1950s and earning a legacy that spans both sides of the border the bridge now crosses. Naming the span after Howe was an act of deliberate symbolic symmetry: a structure binding two nations, carrying the name of a man claimed equally by both.

What the Bridge Means for Trade and Traffic

The Gordie Howe Bridge's significance extends well beyond its toll revenue or its diplomatic backstory. The Detroit-Windsor corridor is one of the busiest and most economically consequential international crossings in the world, carrying an enormous volume of automotive parts, agricultural products, and commercial freight between the United States and Canada each day.

The existing Ambassador Bridge, a privately owned span that has handled that traffic for nearly a century, has long been seen as a chokepoint — a single point of failure in a supply chain that the North American auto industry depends on with near-total reliance. The addition of a fourth crossing, equipped with modern customs infrastructure and designed to accommodate 21st-century commercial volumes, is expected to reduce congestion, accelerate clearance times, and provide redundancy that the existing crossings cannot.

For the auto manufacturers whose supply chains snake back and forth across the Detroit River daily, July 27 is not merely an opening ceremony. It is the arrival of relief that the industry has been waiting for since construction began in 2018.

The Gordie Howe Bridge — delayed, disputed, renegotiated, and ultimately resolved — will open on July 27. And if its namesake's resilience is any guide, it will be built to last.
