Police Seek Answers in Panettiere’s Final Hours

A Death Investigation into actress Hayden Panettiere intensified Wednesday. Authorities continued examining the circumstances surrounding her sudden death in South Carolina. They are questioning whether criminal conduct may have played a role.

Panettiere, known for Heroes, Nashville and the Scream franchise, died Sunday, Aug. 16, at age 36 after being found unresponsive at a residence in Greenville. Her official cause and manner of death have not yet been determined.

Police Will Do an Extensive Death Investigation

The latest developments have placed renewed attention on the people who were with Panettiere shortly before her death, as well as the actress’ complicated history with her former boyfriend, Brian Hickerson.

According to a heavily redacted police report released this week, Hickerson and his brother, Zach Hickerson, were at the residence when Panettiere was found unresponsive. Emergency responders attempted to revive her, but she was pronounced dead at approximately 2:31 p.m. Sunday.

Police have not publicly accused Hickerson of causing Panettiere’s death, and authorities have not announced any arrests in connection with the investigation.

Autopsy Finds No Visible Trauma

The Greenville County Coroner’s Office completed Panettiere’s autopsy Monday. Preliminary findings reportedly showed no visible trauma that would have contributed to her death.

Authorities also have not reported evidence of foul play. However, toxicology and additional testing are still needed before the coroner can establish an official cause and manner of death.

Emergency dispatch audio obtained by news organizations included references to an apparent overdose and cardiac arrest. Those descriptions, however, do not constitute an official determination of Panettiere’s cause of death.

Investigators are therefore attempting to reconstruct the actress’ final hours. Reports indicate authorities have collected electronic devices and other evidence as they seek to establish who Panettiere communicated with, where she was and what occurred before emergency personnel arrived.

A report published Wednesday by TMZ said investigators are examining whether criminal conduct could have been involved. The report did not establish that a crime occurred or that anyone has been formally accused.

Death Investigation Looks at Brian Hickerson’s Presence

Hickerson’s presence at the residence has become a central focus of public attention because of his troubled history with Panettiere.

The pair began dating in 2018, and their relationship was marked by multiple domestic violence incidents. Hickerson was arrested in 2019 in California following allegations involving Panettiere, although that case was later dismissed.

In 2020, he was arrested in Wyoming following another confrontation involving the actress.

Hickerson later pleaded no contest to two felony counts involving injury to a partner in connection with the California case. He was sentenced to jail time, probation and domestic violence classes.

Reports have also detailed allegations that he attempted to intimidate Panettiere during the legal proceedings.

Hickerson has acknowledged his past abusive behavior. In an interview earlier this year, he discussed his arrest for abusing Panettiere and acknowledged why people close to the actress were angry with him.

Difficult Life Experiences

The history is particularly significant because Panettiere had publicly discussed the abuse in her recently released memoir, This Is Me: A Reckoning. The book addressed addiction, trauma, relationships and other difficult experiences from her life and career.

Just days before Panettiere’s death, Hickerson also suffered a legal setback when a judge rejected an effort to reduce or otherwise alter felony domestic violence charges connected to his past conduct involving the actress.

That legal history remains relevant to the broader story, although it does not establish any connection between Hickerson and Panettiere’s death.

Pending Legal Matters Intensify Death Investigation

Reports have also described continuing legal issues stemming from Hickerson’s previous domestic violence cases.

Although he completed portions of his earlier sentence, including jail time, probation and domestic violence classes, the legal consequences of those cases have continued to surface through subsequent court proceedings.

Recent reports indicate his efforts to obtain relief from the felony convictions were unsuccessful.

The status of any remaining litigation or court proceedings should be distinguished from the new death investigation, which is being handled separately by South Carolina authorities.

Hickerson has Previous Domestic Violence Charges

There has been no announcement that Hickerson has been charged in connection with Panettiere’s death.

That distinction is important as investigators continue gathering evidence.

The presence of a person with a documented history of domestic violence may lead authorities to examine the circumstances more closely, but it does not by itself demonstrate criminal responsibility for a death.

Actress Had a Memorable Career

Panettiere began working as a performer as a child and eventually became one of television’s recognizable young stars.

She gained widespread attention as Claire Bennet on the NBC series Heroes, where she played a teenager with regenerative abilities. She later earned critical attention for her role as country singer Juliette Barnes on Nashville, a performance that earned her Golden Globe nominations.

Her film credits included Remember the Titans, Bring It On: All or Nothing, Scream 4 and Scream VI. She also continued working through difficult personal periods and spoke openly about addiction and other challenges.

Panettiere's Memoir "This is Me: A Reckoning"

Earlier in 2026, Panettiere released This Is Me: A Reckoning, providing a detailed account of many of the struggles that had shaped her life. The memoir gave added context to the personal difficulties behind the public image of a successful actress.

Panettiere is survived by her daughter, Kaya, whom she shared with former fiancé Wladimir Klitschko.

Death Investigation Remains Open

For now, authorities have not released an official cause of death, and toxicology results remain an important piece of the investigation.

The preliminary autopsy finding that there was no trauma does not answer the central question of what caused Panettiere’s death.

Investigators must still establish what medications or substances may have been present, what happened during her final hours and whether any outside actions contributed to her death.

Evidence Review in Death Investigation

The investigation is ongoing, and authorities have not publicly announced arrests related to Panettiere’s death. Reports that arrests could be forthcoming remain unconfirmed by law enforcement.

As investigators continue examining evidence, Panettiere’s death is likely to remain under intense scrutiny because of the sudden circumstances, the apparent overdose references in the emergency response, the pending toxicology results and Hickerson’s presence at the scene.
