Hen House Nashville filed for Chapter 11

The fried chicken craze that once sent customers sprinting to counters and forming lines around city blocks is now facing a sobering twist. Hen House Nashville filed for Chapter 11, marking a sharp contrast to the meteoric rise that has defined the sector over the past decade.

Fried chicken restaurants have become one of the hottest tickets in fast food in less than 10 years, transforming from comfort-food staples into cultural phenomena.

The Chicken Sandwich Wars That Changed Everything

The modern fried chicken explosion can be traced to a single moment in August 2019, when Popeyes launched its now-famous chicken sandwich. What followed was nothing short of culinary combat.

The debut ignited the so-called “chicken sandwich wars,” pulling Chick-fil-A into the spotlight as it reminded consumers that its own sandwich dated back to 1964. But nostalgia didn’t slow the frenzy. Popeyes locations across the country were overwhelmed, with customers waiting in snaking lines only to be met with handwritten signs announcing the sandwiches were sold out.

Scenes like these played out nationwide, as detailed at the time by The Washington Post in its review of the 2019 showdown.

From Parking Lot Pop-Up to $1 Billion Payday

Around that same period, another brand was quietly stoking its own fire.

Dave’s Hot Chicken began in 2017 as a modest pop-up in an East Hollywood parking lot, launched by four friends armed with just $900 and a bold recipe. What started as a scrappy sidewalk operation would eventually become a global powerhouse.

In June 2025, Restaurant Business Magazine reported that Dave’s Hot Chicken sold to Roark Capital for $1 billion. Today, the chain boasts more than 300 locations worldwide — proof that in the fried chicken gold rush, some struck it rich.

Traffic Rises While Others Fall

If trends from last year continue, fried chicken chains could remain the most dominant subsector in fast food through 2026.

Market research firm Circana found that traffic at fried chicken fast-food restaurants climbed 3% in the year ending September 2025. By comparison, overall restaurant concepts experienced a 1% decline year-over-year, according to reporting by Fast Company.

Industry observers point to variety and experience as key ingredients in this sustained demand.

Consumers can choose from bone-in pieces, crispy tenders, or towering chicken sandwiches — and customize how they enjoy them. That flexibility, paired with immersive branding, keeps diners coming back.

“This is due to the experiences the brands are creating as well as the variety of chicken and how you can enjoy it,” Reilly Newman of Motif Brands told The Food Institute.

Hen House Nashville Files for Bankruptcy

Yet not every player has been able to ride the wave.

Hen House Nashville filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection as it seeks to reorganize after roughly five years in business. The Buffalo, N.Y.-based operator submitted its petition Feb. 1 in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Western District of New York in Buffalo.

According to RK Consultants, the filing lists approximately $13,400 in assets and between $100,000 and $500,000 in liabilities — a stark imbalance that underscores the challenges facing smaller operators in a crowded market.

The debtor did not specify a particular reason for seeking bankruptcy protection in its court documents.

A Pandemic-Era Dream Meets Economic Headwinds

Hen House Group Inc. founder Sal Andolina conceived the business during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. In spring 2021, he launched the concept from a bright red food truck, serving Nashville hot chicken sandwiches and chicken fingers to eager customers, according to WKBW-TV.

What began as a pandemic-born venture fueled by grit and spice has now entered restructuring — a reminder that even in a booming category, survival is not guaranteed.

As fried chicken continues to dominate headlines and balance sheets alike, the story of Hen House underscores a paradox: in an industry sizzling with growth, the heat can still be too much for some to handle.
