SHELBY COUNTY, Ala. — A human trafficking operation in north Shelby County resulted in 15 arrests, including Robert Aaron Suttles, the director of content for Yea Alabama, an online publication and membership-based platform covering University of Alabama athletics.

Suttles is a longtime Alabama sports journalist who previously worked for The Tuscaloosa News and The Athletic. He was arrested Thursday, July 23, during an operation conducted by the Shelby County Drug Enforcement Task Force.

Authorities said the operation was aimed at combating human trafficking and the exploitation of vulnerable women.

Court Documents show Arrests for Human Trafficking

Court records cited by news organizations show Suttles was charged with soliciting prostitution. He allegedly paid $100 to engage in sexual activity. He was booked into the Shelby County Jail and later released on $1,000 bond.

The charge against Suttles is an allegation. His arrest as part of an operation targeting human trafficking does not mean he has been charged with human trafficking.

Yea Alabama Suspends Suttles

Suttles serves as director of content for Yea Alabama, which describes itself as the “Official Fan Experience of Alabama Athletics.”

Yea Alabama is an independent, membership-based online platform that publishes Alabama Athletics news, interviews, recruiting coverage, behind-the-scenes stories, social media content and program updates.

The organization was established in 2022 and also facilitates name, image and likeness opportunities involving Alabama student-athletes.

The University of Alabama told WBRC that Suttles is not currently a university employee.

Yea Alabama said Suttles had been suspended following his arrest.

“The individual is suspended and is not performing any work for us,” the organization said in a statement reported by AL.com and other news outlets. Yea Alabama added that the alleged conduct was unrelated to its business and that an internal review was underway.

Task Force Targets Human Trafficking

The Shelby County Drug Enforcement Task Force said the operation resulted in the arrests of 15 men. One suspect, Jacob Hollingsworth, also faced drug charges involving alleged possession of methamphetamine, cocaine and marijuana.

Those identified by authorities as arrested were Rodrick Hicks, Quinton Lee, George Brand, Steven Crews, Arthur McClendon, Tremele Perry, Wayne Leslie, Efrem Miller, Robert Suttles, Naushad Sundrani, Jacob Hollingsworth, Prudhvi Paladugu, Carlos Barba-Sanchez, Bruno Reyes and Carter Lundstrom.

Lt. Clayton Smith, commander of the task force, said investigators view prostitution enforcement as connected to the broader problem of exploitation.

“We will not tolerate the victimization of vulnerable women here in Shelby County,” Smith said, adding that investigators have a responsibility to protect people who may feel they have few alternatives.

Suttles has covered college athletics across the Southeastern Conference and became particularly well known for his coverage of Alabama football. The case against him remains pending.
