A large-scale confrontation erupted in rural Wisconsin on Saturday when hundreds of animal welfare activists attempted to force their way into a beagle breeding and research facility, triggering a forceful police response that included rubber bullets, pepper spray, and multiple arrests. The tense standoff unfolded at Ridglan Farms in Blue Mounds and quickly escalated into one of the most volatile animal rights protests in the region in months.

The operation marked a dramatic second attempt in as many months by protesters seeking to remove beagles from the facility, located about 25 miles, roughly 40 kilometers, southwest of Madison.

Mass Mobilization Meets Heavy Police Response

Authorities estimate about 1,000 protesters gathered at the site, where security barriers and law enforcement quickly turned the situation into a high-intensity standoff.

Dane County Sheriff Kalvin Barrett described the severity of the confrontation in a video statement.

He said between 300 and 400 protesters were actively attempting to breach the facility and engage with officers, adding that demonstrators had ignored designated protest areas and blocked roads, preventing emergency vehicle access.

“This is not a peaceful protest,”

Barrett said.

The sheriff’s department confirmed a “significant” number of arrests were made, though an exact total was not immediately available as processing continued into the afternoon.

Barriers, Chaos, and a Failed Break-In Attempt

Protesters attempted to push through multiple layers of security, including a manure-filled trench, hay bale barricades, and barbed-wire fencing. Some individuals managed to breach the outer fence but were unable to enter the main facility, where approximately 2,000 beagles are reportedly housed, according to the Wisconsin State Journal.

Despite the intensity of the effort, no animals were removed during the operation.

“I just feel defeated,”

activist Julie Vrzeski told the newspaper roughly three hours into the protest after no dogs had been successfully seized.

Escalation Outside the Facility and Arrests

Following the failed attempt at Ridglan Farms, protesters later moved their demonstration to downtown Madison, gathering outside the jail where arrested individuals were being held.

Among those detained was the group’s leader, Wayne Hsiung, whose X account posted a photo showing his arrest.

Authorities also reported that a pickup truck driver who “recklessly” drove through the facility’s front gate was taken into custody, with the sheriff’s department stating the action “preventing a potentially deadly outcome.”

A Facility Under Repeated Pressure

This is not the first time Ridglan Farms has been targeted. In March, protesters breached the facility and removed 30 dogs, leading to 27 arrests on trespassing and related charges.

The facility, which has faced ongoing scrutiny, denies allegations of animal mistreatment. However, in October it agreed to surrender its state breeding license effective July 1 as part of a deal to avoid prosecution on animal mistreatment charges.

As tensions continue to rise around the facility, Saturday’s confrontation underscores a deepening conflict between animal rights activists and law enforcement, with both sides signaling that future clashes may not be easily avoided.
