There was a moment at this year's World Cup when the world watched Lionel Messi break down in tears after a routine celebration — and didn't fully understand why. Now, that moment reads differently.

Jorge Messi, father and longtime agent to arguably the greatest player in the history of the sport, has died at age 68 following a long illness, his family announced. He spent his final months moving between a medical center in Rosario and his home, surrounded by his wife, Celia, and his children Rodrigo, Matías, María Sol and Lionel.

A Season Shadowed by Something Unspoken

In hindsight, the signs were there before the family said anything publicly.

After Argentina's 3-0 win over Algeria in the World Cup's opening match, Messi broke down in tears while celebrating his first goal of the tournament — an emotional display that stood out even for a player known for wearing his heart openly. He later said he was going through a difficult personal situation, one he described only as "something unrelated to football," following what he called a few difficult, complicated days.

Weeks later, after Argentina's last-16 win over Egypt, Messi's emotional reaction on the field drew fresh speculation — this time, that it was connected to his father's deteriorating health. Within days, the family confirmed it: Jorge Messi was undergoing medical treatment, and something was wrong.

What went unsaid publicly through much of the tournament has now become the story itself.

More Than an Agent

To reduce Jorge Messi's role to "agent" undersells four decades of a relationship that shaped one of soccer's defining careers.

He accompanied his son from the earliest days of his development, through the move to Barcelona as a teenager, and for years afterward as his formal representative — negotiating the deals and contracts that came to define a career unlike any other in the sport's history. But those who knew him describe a role that went well beyond business.

Newell's Old Boys, the club where Lionel Messi began playing as a boy, described Jorge in a social media statement as the steady presence behind his son's rise — the man who, alongside his wife Celia Cuccittini, supported the career of a player many consider the best of all time with vision, discipline and care.

The Argentine Football Association echoed that sentiment in its own statement of condolence, expressing solidarity with the Messi family during what it called a difficult time and offering what it described as a heartfelt, warm embrace to everyone grieving alongside them.

A Bond That Outlasted the Business

For all the contracts and negotiations Jorge Messi handled over the years, what his son has said publicly about their relationship points to something simpler.

"I always needed my dad's approval, ever since I was a kid. After every match, I'd ask him what he thought of how I played," Lionel Messi once said — a small window into a relationship that never stopped being, at its core, a father and a son.

What Comes Next

Messi spent time with his father in the aftermath of the World Cup before rejoining Inter Miami, returning to the field for the club a week ago. The team is scheduled to host Monterrey Saturday in the 2026 Leagues Cup, but Inter Miami has not yet said whether Messi will take part.

Whatever happens on the field this weekend will happen in the shadow of a loss that, for Messi, has clearly been building for months — visible in stadiums around the world before the public ever knew what it was watching.
