Iceberg lettuce recalled in 27 states because of cyclospora contamination

iceberg lettuce recall

A single shredded head of lettuce has managed to trigger a nationwide scramble, as produce giant Taylor Farms recalls iceberg lettuce shipped to 27 states over fears it's carrying cyclospora — a microscopic parasite responsible for thousands of diarrhea cases already sweeping the country.

It's a stark reminder that sometimes the biggest threats come from the smallest sources.

Company Halts Shipments, Urges Consumers To Toss It Now

Taylor Farms says it's "actively removing" the suspect product from shelves and has hit pause on all iceberg lettuce shipments from Central Mexico into the US, while cutting ties entirely with the implicated lot.

"Consumers who have purchased the recalled iceberg lettuce should discard it immediately and not consume it," the company warned — advice that leaves little room for second-guessing.

A Recall Spanning Nearly The Entire Eastern Half Of The Country

The scope here is staggering. Taylor Farms says the shredded iceberg lettuce moved through supply chains from June 29 through July 16, landing in Alabama, Arkansas, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Maryland, Michigan, Missouri, Mississippi, North Carolina, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia and Wisconsin — a footprint that reads almost like a map of the country itself.

The recall notice includes brand abbreviations and use-by dates, but notably stops short of naming specific retailers or restaurants, leaving many consumers to wonder if their own kitchen is affected.

FDA Says Distribution Details Still Murky

"At this time, Taylor Fresh Foods has not publicly provided distribution information or a list of customers who received the product that was voluntarily removed from the market," the US Food and Drug Administration said in a Friday update — an information gap that has left retailers scrambling to check their own shelves rather than wait for a definitive list.

Major Retailers Move Fast To Clear Shelves

By Saturday, Sysco, Walmart and other major brands confirmed they'd yanked affected products, moving with the urgency of a fire drill rather than waiting for further instruction.

Taco Bell Connection Puts Outbreak In The Spotlight

Federal health officials have traced a sizable cyclospora outbreak in the Midwest directly to Taylor Farms' shredded iceberg lettuce, which was served at select Taco Bell locations across Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, West Virginia and Kentucky. Taco Bell confirmed Friday it has stripped the lettuce from both its restaurants and its entire nationwide supply chain — a swift, sweeping response to a problem that could have otherwise quietly spread further.

The FDA cautioned that the list of affected states isn't necessarily final, and more could be added as investigators dig deeper.

Distributors Scramble To Contain The Fallout

Sysco confirmed it had already acted before the recall became public, proactively pulling all Taylor Farms iceberg lettuce sourced from Mexico. "Sysco proactively removed all Taylor Farms processed iceberg lettuce products from Mexico from distribution and instructed customers to destroy them after learning regulators indicated a suspected link between Taylor Farms' lettuce and a five-state Cyclospora outbreak," a company spokesperson said Saturday.

Walmart, for its part, said it has seen no direct evidence its products were tied to the outbreak, but pulled four Marketside-branded bagged iceberg lettuce salads from select stores anyway, treating caution as the safer bet.

US Foods reported that a "limited number" of products under its Cross Valley Farms brand were swept up in the recall, and the company began alerting customers Friday.

Symptoms That Can Linger For Weeks

Cyclosporiasis isn't a fast-moving bug that clears up overnight. Those infected can suffer watery diarrhea, cramping and bloating for weeks on end, a drawn-out illness capable of tipping into dangerous dehydration if left unmanaged.

Case Counts Are Climbing Fast

The numbers paint a troubling picture: nearly 7,000 confirmed or suspected cases have piled up across 34 states since May 1, according to fresh data released this week by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention — a surge that has caught the attention of health officials nationwide.

Investigators say they're juggling multiple probes simultaneously — some tied to the sprawling Midwest outbreak, others isolated to single states, and still others involving cases that haven't yet been linked to any particular source.

Michigan Emerges As Outbreak's Epicenter

For now, the lettuce-linked outbreak is being treated as a regional crisis centered in the Midwest, with Michigan bearing the brunt. The state's health department has logged more than 5,000 cyclosporiasis cases tied to the investigation.

While officials stopped short of declaring absolute certainty, the state noted it "cannot say with certainty that every illness is linked to the same source of exposure," but added that the sharp, concentrated spike in cases "strongly suggests that the vast majority of these illnesses are associated with the same outbreak." If confirmed, it would mark the largest cyclospora outbreak ever recorded in the US — a grim milestone for an already alarming season.

Not Taylor Farms' First Brush With Outbreak Trouble

This isn't uncharted territory for the produce supplier. Taylor Farms has been linked to past illness outbreaks before, including an E. coli scare tied to slivered onions in 2024 and a separate cyclospora outbreak connected to lettuce back in 2013 — a pattern that now casts a long shadow over the company's safety record as the iceberg lettuce recall continues to widen.
