What Readers Need to Know

  • Federal agents seized Rep. Ilhan Omar’s passport, cellphone and other materials during a court-authorized search of her Washington home.
  • Investigators are examining alleged immigration fraud, false statements and discrepancies involving decades-old immigration records — but Omar has not been charged with a crime.
  • Rumors that Omar fled the United States remain unsubstantiated, while the seizure of her passport puts an unusual new spotlight on both her whereabouts and the records investigators are examining.

“Where’s Omar?”

That question began circulating after reporters spotted Rep. Ilhan Omar’s husband, Tim Mynett, outside the couple’s Washington residence walking their dog — but not the normally outspoken Minnesota congresswoman.

When asked whether Omar had left the country, Mynett did not answer the question.

“You guys are annoying the hell out of all the neighbors around here, man,” he told reporters.

The speculation comes after Homeland Security Investigations agents searched Omar’s Washington residence under a judicially authorized warrant as part of an ongoing federal criminal investigation. Authorities seized her cellphone, laptop, notebooks and passport.

That makes the passport especially interesting.

Reuters reported Friday that a sealed search warrant identifies conspiracy, immigration fraud and false statements among the offenses under investigation. Federal authorities are examining whether Omar or members of her family misrepresented information contained in immigration and citizenship records dating back decades.

One issue receiving intense scrutiny involves Omar’s year of birth.

Omar obtained U.S. citizenship in 2000 through her father’s naturalization while she was reportedly under 18. Investigators are now examining whether her age was accurately represented in immigration documents.

A Minnesota Legislative Reference Library entry previously listed 1981 before Omar’s congressional staff contacted the library in 2019 requesting that it be corrected to 1982.

The Library currently states explicitly that 1982 is Omar’s correct birth year and says other sources had incorrectly reported 1981. Investigators would therefore need something far more substantial than a corrected legislative biography — such as underlying immigration applications, sworn declarations, birth records or evidence showing that a material statement was knowingly false.

That is where the seized records could become important.

Under federal law, citizenship obtained through naturalization can be revoked when it was illegally procured or obtained through concealment of a material fact or willful misrepresentation. Federal law also contains provisions affecting citizenship derived through a parent when that parent’s naturalization is later revoked because of fraud.

Until the evidence becomes public, the raid is significant. The passport seizure is significant. The criminal investigation is real.
