CUPERTINO, Calif. — iPhone Duo will bring a folding screen to Apple's smartphone lineup Oct. 23, starting at $1,999. The device opens into a larger workspace for apps, photographs and video. U.S. preorders begin Oct. 16.

Apple unveiled its first foldable iPhone Sept. 9, pairing the new design with familiar software. Owners can open two apps together, position the phone for a video call or use its outer screen to frame photographs. Apple's launch announcement presents the design as a major expansion of how people can use an iPhone.

For someone who reads, writes, watches shows and manages daily life on a phone, the attraction is easy to understand. More space could make those tasks less cramped. The purchase decision also involves a new shape, different camera priorities and a price that puts everyday usefulness under a much brighter spotlight.

iPhone Duo makes room for two apps

The most useful change may be the ability to keep two things in view. On the iPhone Duo, Split View lets owners place apps beside each other. Apple says they can also open two windows of a supported app, such as Safari, and save app pairs for later use.

Consider comparison shopping. Keeping two product pages open could make it easier to check dimensions, delivery dates or features without repeatedly switching screens. For someone planning a trip, the same layout could help compare hotel details or travel options. The benefit depends on how well each app uses the space.

That gives potential buyers something concrete to look for during a demonstration. Can they read both windows comfortably? Does the keyboard leave enough room for the information they need? A larger display earns its place when it removes an inconvenience that comes up throughout the day.

Apple's announcement names Netflix, Zoom and Slack among developers adapting their apps to the design. Even so, buyers should check their own essential apps before treating the Duo as a replacement for another device. Someone editing documents for work may have different requirements from someone primarily reading, messaging and watching television.

A camera that lets everyone see the picture

The iPhone Duo's folding body also changes the experience of taking a photograph. Apple's product demonstration shows Duo Preview displaying the camera's view on the outer screen. People being photographed can check their own pose and framing before the picture is taken.

For family photographs, that could reduce the back-and-forth of taking a shot, turning the phone around and trying again. Someone taking a self-portrait can also use the outer display to frame the shot with the rear cameras.

Smart Take addresses another familiar problem: the photographer missing from the group picture. Apple says the feature detects when people are posing and takes the photograph automatically. Kid Cue plays animations on the outer display to draw children's attention toward the camera.

The phone can also stand on its own for calls and recordings. Duo FaceTime allows someone nearby to join through the outside display, giving participants another way to share a call. These functions make the folding design relevant to ordinary moments, including a family gathering or a conversation across the kitchen table.

What the first hands-on reports found

Early impressions suggest the hinge and display deserve a closer look. In The Verge's launch-event report, Allison Johnson and Dominic Preston described smooth folding and a matte inner screen that handled glare well. The crease was difficult to detect by touch during the demonstration.

They also described a gradual transition between displays and saw Netflix running with the phone partly folded. Those observations offer an encouraging first impression, although a launch demonstration cannot establish how a device will hold up over years.

That distinction leaves room for excitement and a proper test. A shopper can assess the hinge's feel immediately; durability requires time. Watching how the screen responds while opening, closing and rotating the phone will be more useful in a store than simply admiring it fully unfolded.

The size and camera tradeoffs

According to Apple's technical specifications, the iPhone Duo has a 5.4-inch outer display and a 7.6-inch inner display. It weighs 254 grams, or 8.96 ounces. The body measures 11.3 millimeters thick when closed and 5.2 millimeters when open.

Those measurements describe a device that changes shape substantially in use. Buyers should try reaching across the closed screen and holding the open phone for several minutes. A case adds another variable, particularly for someone who usually carries a phone in a small pocket.

Authentication moves to Touch ID in the side button. The rear camera system includes a 48-megapixel main camera and a 48-megapixel ultrawide. Apple describes its 2x option as optical-quality zoom; the Duo does not have a separate telephoto lens.

TechRadar contributor Jamie Richards identified Face ID, the Action Button and a dedicated telephoto camera among the omissions. He remained enthusiastic about its potential, while making clear he had yet to test it. His reaction reflects a reasonable buying question: which features would an owner actually miss?

For someone who frequently photographs distant subjects, camera reach deserves attention before purchase. Another buyer may place greater value on a larger viewfinder or easier group photographs. The higher price should prompt a comparison of specific needs rather than an assumption that every feature is an upgrade.

Battery numbers need the right comparison

Apple rates the iPhone Duo for up to 24 hours of typical use. Its separate video-playback ratings reach 31 hours on the inner display and 44 hours on the outer display. Those figures describe different activities and should not be treated as interchangeable promises.

The company supports wired fast charging and MagSafe and Qi2 wireless charging up to 25 watts. Buyers planning to reuse a charger should check the equipment requirements for the charging speed they expect.

Apple's battery-testing information describes controlled video tests using preproduction phones, repeated movies and specified settings. It also says actual results depend on factors including signal strength, location, settings and usage. That makes the published figures useful reference points while leaving room for substantial differences in daily life.

A review that combines navigation, messaging, photography and time on each screen will provide a more useful comparison for many buyers. Heavy gaming or long video calls deserve attention, too. Until that testing arrives, Apple's numbers should remain clearly identified as the company's ratings.

Apple Pencil and AI have their own timelines

Apple says the iPhone Duo will support Apple Pencil with USB-C later this year. It has not supplied an exact date in the announcement. Anyone buying primarily for handwritten notes, drawing or document markup should confirm availability before relying on that feature.

The announced accessory is specifically the USB-C Apple Pencil. Owners of another Pencil model should check compatibility instead of assuming that an accessory already in their drawer will work. A promised capability can influence a purchase, but a dated release commitment is easier to plan around.

The phone also joins Apple's broader AI rollout. On its Apple Intelligence and Siri page, the company describes an assistant designed to locate information across personal content and act within supported apps. Examples include finding an old photograph, locating an email and helping compose a message.

Apple says it uses processing on the device and Private Cloud Compute to protect personal information. Those are the company's descriptions of its privacy approach. Users still need to understand the permissions and features they enable, especially when an assistant works across several kinds of personal content.

Siri AI is rolling out in beta with language and regional restrictions. The Duo announcement's footnotes also disclose daily limits for certain cloud-based AI functions and say expanded access will eventually carry a fee. They do not state that future price. Buyers should therefore avoid assuming that every advertised AI capability includes unlimited use indefinitely.

What the iPhone Duo costs

Apple's U.S. store lists four storage options, with prices before tax:

Storage U.S. price
256GB $1,999
512GB $2,199
1TB $2,599
2TB $3,199

The colors are Night Sky and Star White. Preorders open at 5 a.m. Pacific on Oct. 16, ahead of the Oct. 23 availability date. Storage alone creates a $1,200 difference between the least and most expensive versions.

That makes checking current storage use a sensible starting point. Someone who records large amounts of video may want more room. Another person may find that the entry model comfortably exceeds what they use today. The decision should account for how long they expect to keep the device.

A complete budget should also include any case, protection plan or charging equipment the buyer wants. Comparing the full upfront amount with the full cost of a payment arrangement makes the choices easier to understand. The smallest advertised monthly number does not reveal all of those costs.

The iPhone Duo uses eSIM and has no physical SIM tray. Customers should confirm that their carrier supports activation, particularly if they plan to use the phone abroad. A compatible cellular plan remains another part of the ongoing cost.

The $57.99 monthly option is a lease

Apple advertises the iPhone Duo through Apple Upgrade, a leasing program provided by Klarna. Starting rates are $57.99 monthly for 24 months or $82.99 monthly for 12 months. Completing the initial lease term does not automatically make the customer the owner.

At the end of that term, customers can upgrade, return the device or purchase it by paying the remaining amount. Apple's terms calculate the purchase amount using the original price, applicable taxes, payments already made and relevant trade-in credits. Customers who take no action face an extension process explained in the agreement.

AppleCare is separate from the lease payment. Early termination requires the remaining lease payments, and a damaged return can bring additional charges. Enrollment for an iPhone also requires connection to AT&T, T-Mobile or Verizon.

The arrangement may appeal to someone who regularly changes phones and understands the return requirements. A customer planning to keep the Duo for several years should compare the total ownership cost. Before signing, the useful questions are straightforward: What is due now, what remains later, and what happens if the phone is damaged?

Protection deserves a place in the budget

Apple's U.S. limited warranty covers defects in materials and workmanship for one year under its stated conditions. It excludes accidental damage and ordinary wear, among other limitations. That leaves a meaningful difference between a manufacturing defect and damage from dropping the phone.

Apple also lists an IP68 water- and dust-resistance rating, tested under laboratory conditions. Water resistance can decline with wear, and the rating does not make the warranty cover an accidental spill. Owners should follow Apple's care instructions as they would with any expensive device.

Separately, AppleCare plans offer accidental-damage protection subject to their terms and service charges. Comparing plans requires looking at the subscription price, the charge for an eligible repair and any theft-and-loss conditions. The best choice will depend partly on what other devices a household wants to cover.

USA Herald could not verify U.S. screen or hinge repair prices for the iPhone Duo as of Sept. 11. Buyers should look for those figures as the launch approaches. A general iPhone repair charge should not be assumed to cover every type of damage to a folding display.

For anyone considering the Duo, a store visit can turn excitement into a more informed decision. Open the apps used most, type a real message and try framing a photograph. Check how the phone feels closed, since that is how it will spend much of its time between tasks.

Apple has given customers an intriguing reason to reconsider their next upgrade. The larger workspace could be especially useful for people who already do much of their reading, organizing and creating on an iPhone. Whether it earns its price will come down to how naturally those activities fit the screen when it opens.
