Iran Escalates Mine Deployment in Strait of Hormuz as U.S. Naval Crisis Deepens, Sources Say

A dangerous escalation is unfolding in one of the world’s most critical maritime chokepoints. Iranian forces have reportedly increased mine deployment in the Strait of Hormuz this week, raising fears of a deeper confrontation that could shake global energy markets and intensify the ongoing military standoff.

A U.S. official and a source with knowledge of the situation confirmed that the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps navy laid additional mines in the strategic waterway, a move that comes as tensions between Tehran and Washington surge.

Why It Matters: Oil Lifeline Under Threat as Military Clash Escalates

The Strait of Hormuz is not just a regional flashpoint. It is the world’s most important oil transit route, and any disruption sends shockwaves through global markets. With both sides escalating military actions, the risk to commercial shipping and energy security is rapidly increasing.

"After being briefed on the new developments, President Trump ordered the U.S. Navy on Truth Social on Thursday to "shoot and kill" any Iranian boats laying mines with "no hesitation."

The order underscores the growing volatility in the region, where even routine naval movements now carry the risk of direct confrontation.

The Big Picture: Global Oil Flows Disrupted at Historic Levels

The escalation is already contributing to what the International Energy Agency has described as the largest oil supply disruption in modern market history, surpassing even the shocks of the 1970s.

Roughly 20 percent of the world’s seaborne oil normally passes through the Strait of Hormuz. That flow has now collapsed to single-digit levels on most days, down from more than 100 ships daily, as commercial operators steer clear of the danger zone.

This marks the second time mines have been deployed in the strait since the war began, though it remains unclear whether earlier mines have all been located and cleared.

Behind the Scenes: U.S. Tracking Mine Operations Closely

U.S. military intelligence has been closely monitoring Iranian activity in the strait, according to sources familiar with the situation. Officials say they are aware of the scope of the latest mine-laying operation, though they are not disclosing exact figures.

The U.S. official confirmed that Washington knows how many new mines have been deployed but declined to specify the number. Before the latest escalation, analysts estimated Iran had deployed fewer than 100 mines in total.

The White House has declined to comment on intelligence matters.

At the start of the conflict, U.S. officials assessed that more than 90 percent of Iran’s major mine-laying vessels and storage sites had been destroyed. However, they believed Iranian forces still retained hidden stockpiles along the coastline.

Iran’s ability to deploy mines remains significant. Small fishing-boat-sized Gashti vessels can each carry two to four mines and release them directly into shipping lanes. Iran is believed to still operate dozens of these boats, which can also be armed with rocket launchers and machine guns for maritime interdiction.

State of Play: U.S. Naval Power Builds in the Region

The arrival of the aircraft carrier USS George H.W. Bush and its strike group on Thursday marks a major expansion of U.S. military presence in the region under U.S. Central Command.

It is now the third U.S. aircraft carrier deployed in the area, tightening pressure on Iran and expanding Washington’s military options should the conflict escalate further.

CENTCOM confirmed Thursday that it has redirected 33 vessels since the blockade began, signaling a sustained and growing maritime operation.

What to Watch: Underwater Drones and Mine-Clearing Operations Expand

U.S. officials say the Navy is deploying underwater drones in the Strait of Hormuz to detect and clear naval mines, a critical but highly risky operation given the narrow and heavily contested waterway.

Trump’s Thursday announcement also indicated that two mine countermeasure vessels, the USS Chief and the USS Pioneer, may already be operating in the strait.

Additional support could include specialized mine-hunting helicopters and surveillance aircraft, although experts warn that conditions in the strait remain extremely dangerous due to the ongoing threat of Iranian attacks.

"to continue, but at a tripled up level!"

Military analysts caution that the combination of mines, naval patrols, and aerial surveillance is turning the Strait of Hormuz into one of the most heavily militarized and volatile waterways in the world.
