It’s a moment that feels straight out of a thriller: you casually mention something in conversation — and minutes later, it appears on your screen. Coincidence… or something more unsettling?

For millions of people, the experience is eerily familiar.

A lot of users say they’ve had that chilling feeling their phone is somehow listening in.

One woman described it bluntly: "Sometimes when I talk about something with my friends, then I'll, like, look on TikTok 30 minutes later – and the same thing will show up."

Another traveler shared a similar story after planning a trip: "We were talking about this trip before we came, and then my Instagram reel was just full of New York content for weeks."

And it doesn’t stop there.

A third woman recalled discussing food with friends, only to see it instantly online: "And then the second you open the app, it shows you exactly that," she said. "It's a bit strange!"

So what’s really going on?

"The Big Question: Is Your Phone Listening?"

Despite the growing suspicion, experts say the answer is clear — and maybe surprising.

"It is not," said Ari Paparo, an ad industry veteran, consultant and author. "I've been asked about this a million times. And I can guarantee you that your phone is not passively listening to you for advertising purposes."

Even among his own circle, the myth persists.

"Oh, my whole family thinks it's true!" he laughed.

"Why Mass Surveillance Would Be Impossible"

Paparo argues the idea simply doesn’t hold up technically.

"Listening to every conversation around the world, and interpreting them and looking for certain words, and then matching them to the ads is impossible," he said.

Processing audio from billions of devices in real time? That would require unimaginable computing power — far beyond what companies use for advertising.

"So Why Does It Feel So Real?"

If phones aren’t listening, why does it feel like they are?

The answer lies in something far more powerful — and far more subtle.

Advertisers don’t need your microphone. They already have your data.

"They can infer or deduce things about you, like where you live, and your age, and probably what you're interested in, based on what's websites you went to or what apps you've used. And that whole combination can get pretty precise," Paparo explained.

In other words: your digital behavior speaks louder than your voice ever could.

"Your Household Might Be Giving You Away"

There’s another hidden factor that makes ads feel almost psychic — shared internet connections.

Ever wondered why you saw an ad right after mentioning something to someone at home?

Paparo explains: "Your wife could have looked for a peeler, and then the ad company couldn't really tell the difference between her and you, because you're using the same internet in the same household," he said. "That happens a lot."

So it’s not your phone listening — it’s your network revealing.

"Scientists Put the Theory to the Test"

To settle the debate, researchers have actually investigated whether phones secretly record conversations.

David Choffnes, a computer science professor, ran large-scale experiments to find out.

"We did a study with thousands of apps on an Android device, and wanted to see, as you interact with these apps, are they recording your audio and sending it off?"

The result?

"We didn't see any surreptitious recording of information," he said. "But these companies are very good at watching everything you're doing online."

While your microphone may be safe, your online activity is under constant observation.

Choffnes even built a “smart home” lab filled with connected devices to track data flows.

"We try to identify, are they sending data to places we're not comfortable with?" he said.

The findings point to a different kind of surveillance — one driven by clicks, searches, and behavior patterns.

"What Advertisers Actually Know About You"

Companies may not know your name or exact identity, but they know your profile — in astonishing detail.

Some users can even request their data reports.

Choffnes did — and what he received was staggering.

"Just filled wall-to-wall with inferences about me," he said, describing a report over 300 pages long.

Yet, it’s not perfect.

It claimed he owned an Xbox.

"I do not have an Xbox," he said.

It also suggested he was highly likely to go on a cruise.

"Which is interesting, 'cause I never want to go on a cruise!" he laughed.

"Can You Take Back Control?"

There are ways to limit tracking — but they require action.

"You can push your lawmakers to come up with laws that are favorable for consumers and not just favorable for the businesses that are collecting data from us," Choffnes said.

Even your choice of browser matters.

Paparo noted: "The Safari browser doesn't allow a lot of this," adding, "Advertisers are not big fans of Apple and Safari."

So, are smartphones secretly eavesdropping?

Experts remain firm.

"I'm sure the phone is not overhearing you," Paparo said.

But he also knows the battle against perception is already lost.

"I'm positive that no one will believe me!"
