Jobs and AI: Meta Begins Cutting thousands of Jobs in Major Layoff Wave as Uncertainty Grows Over Future Workforce Changes

A wave of fear and uncertainty has swept through Meta as thousands of employees receive early morning layoff emails in one of the company’s most aggressive restructuring moves to date, cutting roughly 10 percent of its workforce and reshaping its future around AI and leaner teams.

Meta Layoffs Begin Across Global Workforce

The moment Meta employees had been bracing for has arrived. Beginning at 4 a.m. local time on May 20, termination emails started landing in inboxes across multiple regions in carefully timed waves. Roughly 10 percent of Meta’s 78,000 employees are being notified that their roles are being eliminated, amounting to about 8,000 job cuts in a sweeping restructuring effort.

The notifications are not random. According to a memo sent by Meta’s HR chief Janelle Gale to an employee resource group on Monday, the company is staggering the layoffs across regions to manage the scale of the workforce reduction and internal disruption.

For thousands of employees, the morning began not with routine work messages, but with confirmation that their time at one of the world’s most powerful tech companies had ended.

A Company Reshaping Itself Under Pressure

Meta has framed the layoffs as part of a broader shift toward efficiency and faster decision making. The company has been under pressure to reduce costs while continuing to fund aggressive investments in artificial intelligence and next generation platforms.

In a Monday internal memo, Gale signaled that the company is moving away from larger, layered management systems and toward flatter organizational structures designed to increase speed and accountability.

"We're now at the stage where many orgs can operate with a flatter structure with smaller teams of pods/cohorts that can move faster and with more ownership,"

The restructuring is not only about cost reduction. It is also about redesigning how Meta operates internally, removing layers of management and consolidating teams to accelerate execution in a highly competitive tech landscape.

Executives have indicated that managerial positions are among those being reduced as part of this shift, signaling a cultural and operational overhaul that goes beyond temporary layoffs.

Severance Packages Under the Spotlight

As the layoffs unfold, attention has turned sharply to what affected employees will receive in return. For many, the financial package will determine how quickly they can recover from sudden job loss in a volatile tech market.

US employees impacted by the cuts will receive a severance package that includes 16 weeks of base pay, equal to four months, plus an additional two weeks of pay for every year of continuous employment. These details come from an internal document reviewed by Business Insider.

Healthcare coverage is also being extended significantly. Laid-off employees and their families will receive 18 months of healthcare coverage, a major increase compared to previous packages and described as triple the prior amount in earlier reporting.

Meta’s approach places it among companies offering more substantial exit packages in recent tech layoffs, though it is not alone in using generous severance to soften the impact of workforce reductions.

Other major firms have taken similar steps. Fintech company Block recently offered laid-off employees 20 weeks of salary plus an additional week per year of tenure and six months of healthcare coverage. Amazon has also provided severance packages including three months of full pay and continued healthcare benefits, along with additional separation support.

Outside the United States, Meta employees will receive comparable packages adjusted according to local employment laws and regional standards, though the company has not disclosed exact breakdowns.

Employees Left in Limbo for Weeks

The emotional toll of the layoffs has been building for weeks. Since Meta first announced the planned job cuts on April 23, employees have been operating under constant uncertainty, unsure whether they would be affected.

That uncertainty has created a climate of anxiety across teams, with many workers continuing their responsibilities while quietly preparing for the possibility of sudden termination.

At an internal meeting last month, HR chief Janelle Gale acknowledged the strain on staff morale and attempted to address concerns about the scale of the restructuring.

"the best version possible"

She also referenced the difficulty of the moment more directly, describing the situation in blunt terms while emphasizing efforts to support employees through the transition.

"a 'shitty' situation"

In the same discussions, Gale noted that COBRA healthcare coverage had been tripled to provide more stability for those losing their jobs.

Despite these measures, employees have described the period since the announcement as one of the most stressful in the company’s recent history, with daily routines overshadowed by uncertainty and speculation about internal decisions.

Strategic Shift Toward Artificial Intelligence

While layoffs dominate headlines, Meta is simultaneously repositioning itself around artificial intelligence. The company has indicated that more than 7,000 employees will be reassigned to work on AI-related initiatives, signaling where future investment and growth are expected to concentrate.

This pivot reflects the broader industry race to dominate AI infrastructure, tools, and consumer applications. Meta has committed billions of dollars toward AI development and is significantly increasing capital expenditures to support this strategy.

In April, Meta forecast that its 2026 capital expenditures would range between 125 billion dollars and 145 billion dollars, underscoring the scale of its investment ambitions even amid workforce reductions.

The company is attempting to balance two competing realities. On one hand, it is cutting thousands of jobs to streamline operations. On the other hand, it is pouring unprecedented levels of funding into emerging technologies it sees as essential to long term competitiveness.

A Culture of Restructuring and Further Uncertainty

The current layoffs may not be the final round. Meta leaders have reportedly told staff that additional job cuts are not being ruled out beyond this 10 percent reduction cycle, according to prior reporting by Business Insider.

This possibility has added another layer of instability for remaining employees, who now face the prospect of further restructuring in the months ahead.

Internally, leadership has emphasized efficiency, agility, and tighter organizational design as guiding principles for the company’s next phase. But for many employees, those principles translate into ongoing uncertainty about job security and the future direction of their teams.

A Defining Moment for Meta’s Workforce

The layoffs represent more than a cost cutting exercise. They mark a turning point in how Meta is redefining itself in a rapidly evolving technology landscape.

Thousands of employees are now confronting immediate career disruption, while others wait for clarity on whether more changes are coming. At the same time, the company is accelerating its push into artificial intelligence with massive financial commitments and structural changes designed to support faster innovation.

The result is a company moving in two directions at once, shrinking its workforce while expanding its technological ambitions at historic scale.

For employees, the message is clear. Meta is not just changing how it operates. It is fundamentally reshaping who it is and what it prioritizes, with consequences that will continue to unfold long after the layoff emails stop arriving.
