A visiting judge removed Judge John Roach from all further proceedings. The ruling does not overturn Karmelo Anthony’s murder conviction. Judge Michael Chitty will now decide whether Anthony receives a new trial.

McKINNEY, Texas — A judge’s words outside the courtroom have reshaped one of Texas’ most closely watched murder cases, giving convicted teenager Karmelo Anthony a significant—but limited—legal victory as he seeks to overturn his conviction and 35-year prison sentence.

Visiting Judge Sid Harle ordered state District Judge John Roach recused Wednesday from all further proceedings involving Anthony, now 19. Roach presided over the June trial in which jurors convicted Anthony of murdering 17-year-old Austin Metcalf during a confrontation at a high school track meet.

The defense focused heavily on a television interview Roach gave after the verdict. When asked whether the jury “got it right,” Roach answered, “Yeah, they did,” before adding, “Whatever they say, they got it right.”

Those remarks became more than post-trial commentary. They created a legal question about whether Roach could appear impartial while deciding Anthony’s motion for a new trial—a proceeding that could require the judge to evaluate alleged errors arising from his own courtroom.

Harle did not find that Roach was incapable of being fair. In fact, the visiting judge said he believed Roach could impartially consider the defense motion. But judicial-recusal standards do not depend exclusively on proof of actual bias. They also protect public confidence in the courts by asking whether a reasonable, fully informed observer might question a judge’s impartiality.

In his written order, Harle concluded that Roach’s impartiality “might reasonably be questioned” and directed that another judge preside over the case. That language tracks the central standard contained in Texas recusal law.

Judge Michael Chitty was subsequently assigned to determine whether Anthony has established grounds for a new trial.

The distinction is critical: Roach’s removal does not erase the guilty verdict, invalidate Anthony’s sentence or establish that the original trial was unfair. It changes the decision-maker—not the present legal status of the conviction.

Anthony’s attorneys contend that a retrial is necessary partly because Roach imposed strict courtroom-access rules that allegedly limited public observation of the proceedings. Prosecutors maintain that the restrictions were designed to protect the trial’s integrity amid demonstrations, intense media attention and a torrent of inflammatory online commentary.

The underlying case began during a rain-soaked track meet when Anthony sat beneath a Memorial High School team tent in the stadium bleachers. Witnesses testified that Metcalf and other students repeatedly told him to leave.

The exchange escalated. According to a police report, Anthony reached into a bag and said, “Touch me and see what happens.” Witnesses said Metcalf then pushed Anthony, who pulled out a knife and stabbed Metcalf in the chest.

Prosecutors argued that Anthony provoked the confrontation and acted as the aggressor. Anthony’s defense maintained that he acted in self-defense. Anthony did not testify, and jurors ultimately rejected the self-defense theory.

Outside the courtroom, the case became a national flashpoint. Social-media users frequently framed the killing through race because Anthony is Black and Metcalf was white. Attorneys on both sides, however, told jurors that the tragedy was not about race. Both families reported enduring harassment, and prosecutors said death threats reached people connected to the case.

Anthony’s supporters cheered after Roach’s removal, with some chanting “Free Karmelo.” Legally, however, Anthony remains convicted and imprisoned unless Chitty grants the new-trial motion or a higher court later overturns the judgment.

The next hearing will test something larger than which side commands the loudest online following. It will determine whether Anthony can identify a legally sufficient defect in the proceedings serious enough to require that a jury hear the case again.

Roach’s recusal reinforces a fundamental principle: justice must not only be administered fairly—it must also appear fair to an informed and reasonable public.
