Kansas Wrong-Way Crash on I-670 Kills One, Leaves Two Critical as Police Suspect Impaired Drivers

kansas I-670 wrong way crash

In the predawn darkness of a Sunday morning, a white Kia Optima was moving in entirely the wrong direction — eastbound in the westbound lanes of one of downtown Kansas City's busiest interstate corridors. The collision that followed was not a question of if, but when. At approximately 2:45 a.m., the when arrived.

The Kansas wrong-way crash on Interstate 670, occurring where the highway passes beneath Locust Street in the heart of downtown, killed one person and left two others in critical condition — a devastating outcome that Kansas City police say was likely fueled by impairment behind both steering wheels.

How the Crash Unfolded

Officer Alayna Gonzalez of the Kansas City Police Department outlined the sequence in a preliminary investigation summary: the white Kia Optima was traveling east in the westbound lanes of I-670, drifting across multiple lanes of oncoming traffic in a path that gave other drivers almost no time to react. A black Chevrolet Avalanche, moving in the correct direction, struck the Kia broadside as the vehicles converged.

The physics of a wrong-way interstate collision are unforgiving — two vehicles closing on each other at combined highway speeds, with no time for evasive action and no margin for error. The Kia absorbed the full violence of the impact.

Three passengers inside the Kia suffered life-threatening injuries and were rushed to a local hospital. One was pronounced dead upon arrival. The remaining two were listed in critical condition as of Sunday, their survival uncertain. In a detail that compounds the tragedy's bitter irony, neither the driver of the Kia nor the driver of the Chevrolet Avalanche sustained injuries in the crash.

Impairment Suspected in Both Vehicles

Kansas City police said Sunday that both drivers are suspected of having been impaired at the time of the collision — a finding that, if confirmed, would mean the lives lost and broken in the early hours of Sunday morning were not the product of mechanical failure or road conditions, but of choices made before anyone turned a key in an ignition.

The investigation remains ongoing. Police did not specify the nature of the suspected impairment or indicate whether either driver had been charged as of Sunday.

Four Hours, a Closed Highway, a Rising Toll

All westbound lanes of I-670 — the corridor that forms the southern arc of downtown Kansas City's loop of highways — remained sealed for approximately four hours while investigators worked the scene. The highway has since reopened.

But the broader context of Sunday's crash extends beyond the immediate incident. The death marks Kansas City's 29th traffic fatality of the year — a grim statistical acceleration compared to 24 deaths recorded at the same point last year. The trajectory represents a 20% increase year-over-year in traffic deaths, a trend that arrives as city officials and traffic safety advocates have been pushing for stronger enforcement of impaired driving laws across the metro area.

One person went out to drive in the wrong direction in the middle of the night and came home in a body bag — not the driver, but the passengers who had no say in the matter. That asymmetry, as much as any statistic, is what makes the Kansas City wrong-way crash not just a traffic fatality report, but a preventable human catastrophe.
