Karmelo Anthony, a 17-year-old high school student, has been formally charged with first-degree murder in the fatal stabbing of fellow student Austin Metcalf during a high school track meet in Frisco, Texas, according to reports by TMZ and other outlets.

According to police, Metcalf, a white student from Memorial, asked Anthony to leave the area, leading to an altercation. The situation escalated, and Anthony allegedly stabbed Metcalf in the chest.

The event shook the local community and soon gained national media attention. Authorities say Anthony admitted to the stabbing but claimed self-defense.

Karmelo Anthony Charges

On Tuesday, the Collin County District Attorney announced that a grand jury had indicted Anthony on a charge of first-degree murder.

“Today, I summarized the evidence and asked the Grand Jury to return a first-degree murder indictment against Karmelo Anthony — which they did,” the district attorney said during a press conference.

“We’ll continue doing our part—fully and fairly—to pursue justice under the law.”

Anthony’s defense attorney Mike Howard responded via a video statement:

“We are confident that when all the facts are presented and the full story is heard, the jury will reach the right conclusion and justice will be done.”

If convicted, Anthony could face life in prison.

Controversy Over Bond and Public Reaction

The case has been polarizing, particularly after a judge reduced Anthony’s bond from $1 million to $250,000 due to “financial hardship.” Despite that, Anthony was later seen living with his family in a $900,000 gated community home in Richwoods, where neighbors claimed he even bought a new car.

His family raised more than $530,000 through a GiveSendGo fundraiser, insisting on their page that “the narrative being spread is false, unjust, and harmful.”

The decision to release Anthony sparked widespread backlash online, with critics pointing to racial disparities in the criminal justice system. The fact that Anthony, who is Black, was charged in the killing of a white teen added fuel to the national debate.
