A Florida couple who were killed in Kenya in a tourist helicopter crash had their Coral Gables home burglarized. The two suspects broke in days after their deaths.

Police allege that the suspects stole luxury vehicles, jewelry, electronics, personal documents and artwork, including a sculpture valued at more than $500,000.

Henry Parra, 55, and Adam Hlavaty, 42, were among seven people killed when a tourist helicopter crashed in Kenya’s Samburu County on Aug. 19.

The couple had been on safari when the helicopter went down in a mountainous area. Authorities have not indicated that there was anything suspicious about the crash. And have not explained how the burglars learned that the couple had died before the burglary.

Burglars Allegedly Targeted Empty Home

According to an arrest report, Geybert Alexander Garcia, 40, and Melany Perdomo, 24, allegedly entered the Coral Gables residence sometime between Thursday and Saturday, shortly after the deadly crash.

Police said the pair “ransacked the residence and removed numerous items belonging to the decedent such as personal and business documents, jewelry, electronics, and artwork.”

Among the property reported stolen were Parra and Hlavaty’s 2023 Land Rover and 2020 Porsche Taycan.

Suspects Damaged Home of Couple Killed in Kenya

The burglary left visible damage to the home. Lauren Bailey, a family friend who attended a court hearing involving the suspects, said the front door had been destroyed, and a security camera had been ripped from the property.

“The house was damaged; it was broken into,” Bailey told WPLG, adding that photographs of the damage had been provided to prosecutors.

Tracking Technology Led Police to Stolen Vehicles of Men Killed in Kenya

Investigators were able to use electronic signals from a stolen MacBook and the Land Rover to trace the property to a residence in a nearby community.

When police arrived, both of the victims’ stolen vehicles were reportedly parked outside the home.

Inside, officers recovered several valuable pieces of artwork, including a sculpture belonging to the victims that police estimated was worth more than $500,000. Investigators also found equipment allegedly used to create or modify fraudulent documents.

Police additionally discovered a Ford F-150 that had been reported stolen in Indian River County.

The recovery of the vehicles and other property gave investigators evidence they say connects Garcia and Perdomo to the alleged burglary. Both suspects were arrested on multiple felony charges, including burglary and grand theft auto.

Suspect Presents Disputed Document in Court

During a court hearing Wednesday, Garcia’s attorney, Paul Basile, presented a document that purported to show that one of the crash victims had given Garcia permission to use a vehicle and be on the property.

The document immediately came under scrutiny.

A family friend told WPLG that the victims could not have authorized the document because they were outside the United States at the time it was allegedly signed.

She also said the family had no reason to give Garcia permission to enter the home or use the vehicles.

Coral Gables police Detective Wilfredo Diaz testified that he believed the document was fraudulent.

The judge also expressed skepticism about the document and ordered Garcia and Perdomo held without bond.

Seven Were Killed in Kenya in Deadly Crash

The burglary investigation followed a deadly helicopter crash that claimed the lives of seven people during a trip in Kenya.

Parra and Hlavaty were killed alongside Telemundo executive José Suárez; Michele Sensi-Contugi, the director general of Ecuador’s intelligence agency; his wife, Stephany Maria Hollihan Vasconez, who was a U.S. dual citizen; food entrepreneur Roger Edward Duarte; and pilot Josh Outram.

The helicopter crashed in Samburu County, a region known for wildlife reserves and safari tourism. Rescue officials responded to the mountainside crash, but there were no survivors.

The deaths left the couple’s family and friends dealing with the loss while also confronting the alleged burglary at their home in Florida.

Investigators continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the break-in, including how the suspects allegedly gained access to the property and whether they knew the homeowners had died in Kenya.

The criminal case against Garcia and Perdomo is separate from the investigation into the helicopter crash.
