In a stunning development that has rocked one of the nation’s largest school districts, Los Angeles Unified School District Superintendent Alberto Carvalho has announced his resignation — just months after the FBI raided his home and office, placing him on administrative leave.

The district confirmed Sunday that Carvalho’s resignation is effective June 21, 2026. The LAUSD Board of Education acknowledged receipt of the letter and emphasized its commitment to stability, continuity, and providing high-quality education for students.

Acting Superintendent Andrés Chait will continue in the role until a permanent replacement is named, though no timeline for that process was provided.

The FBI has remained tight-lipped about the exact nature of its investigation, but agents executed search warrants in February at Carvalho’s office near LAUSD headquarters, his San Pedro home, and a property near Miami, Florida. While Carvalho has not been charged with any crime, the raids have fueled intense speculation.

The timing overlaps with a separate federal fraud case against Joanna Smith-Griffin, the founder and CEO of the now-defunct education technology company AllHere. The firm secured a $6 million contract with LAUSD two years ago to develop an AI-powered chatbot called “Ed,” which Carvalho promoted as a personal assistant for students and parents to track grades and access resources. The deal collapsed, and Smith-Griffin was later arrested on charges including securities and wire fraud. By the time it fell apart, the district had reportedly paid $3 million upfront.

Carvalho’s sudden exit leaves the massive LAUSD — which serves hundreds of thousands of students — in a state of uncertainty at a critical time. His leadership had been marked by ambitious tech initiatives, but the failed AI chatbot project and the shadow of the FBI investigation have raised serious questions about oversight, contracting practices, and accountability at the highest levels of the district.

For parents, teachers, and students, this resignation adds another layer of instability to an already complex system. As the board begins the search for new leadership, many will be watching closely to see whether this marks a turning point toward greater transparency — or if deeper issues remain buried beneath the surface.
