Lindsey Graham, the longtime Republican senator from South Carolina and one of President Donald Trump's closest allies in the U.S. Senate, has died at the age of 71, according to a statement released by his office.

The announcement said Graham passed away on Saturday following a brief and sudden illness, prompting an outpouring of tributes from political leaders in the United States and around the world.

His office said his family requested privacy during the difficult time.

"His family appreciates your prayers at this time and asks for privacy during this incredibly difficult period," the statement said.

Emergency responders were reportedly called to Graham's Capitol Hill residence Saturday night after receiving a report of a cardiac arrest, according to NBC News.

Lindsey Graham was a Longtime South Carolina Senator

Graham served as South Carolina's U.S. senator since 2003, making him one of the Senate's longest-serving Republican members. Over more than two decades in the chamber, he became one of the party's leading voices on national security, military affairs, judicial nominations, and foreign policy.

Before joining the Senate, Graham represented South Carolina's 3rd Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives, first elected in 1994.

His public service began even earlier through military service. Graham was a colonel in the U.S. Air Force Reserve and worked as a military attorney, or Judge Advocate General (JAG), during his career. He continued serving in the Air Force Reserve while holding elected office, becoming one of the few members of Congress with extensive military legal experience.

Throughout his political career, Graham frequently emphasized a strong national defense, expanded military readiness, and American leadership abroad.

Evolution of His Relationship with Donald Trump

One of the more notable political transformations of Graham's career involved his relationship with Donald Trump.

During the 2016 Republican presidential primary, Graham was an outspoken critic of Trump and famously warned that nominating him could prove disastrous for Republicans.

However, after Trump won the presidency, the two developed a close political alliance. Graham became one of Trump's most reliable supporters in the Senate, defending many of the administration's domestic and foreign policy initiatives and serving as an influential adviser on judicial nominations, national security, and international affairs.

Following news of Graham's death, Trump paid tribute on social media.

"One of the greatest people and Senators I have ever known," Trump wrote. "He was always working and was a true American Patriot. Lindsey will be greatly missed."

Foreign Policy Defined Much of His Career

Foreign policy remained one of Graham's defining issues throughout his time in Congress.

He was a strong supporter of NATO, consistently advocated for close U.S.-Israel relations, and backed military assistance to Ukraine following Russia's full-scale invasion in 2022. Graham also supported economic sanctions against Russia and repeatedly argued for maintaining pressure on Moscow.

Only days before his reported death, Graham had traveled to Kyiv for what was described as his 10th visit since the war began.

During the visit, he met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and toured a drone manufacturing facility.

Zelensky later described the meeting as productive and shared video from the Ukrainian presidential office.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen also honored Graham, saying he remained committed to supporting Ukraine until the end of his life.

She wrote that Graham worked tirelessly with European allies to strengthen sanctions against Russia and praised him as a determined and fearless leader.

Strong Supporter of Israel

Graham was also widely recognized as one of Israel's strongest supporters in the U.S. Senate.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu praised Graham's longstanding commitment to the U.S.-Israel alliance.

"Lindsey understood that the security of Israel and America are inseparable," Netanyahu said. "Israel has lost one of its greatest friends."

Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz similarly described Graham as one of Israel's most steadfast allies, saying his unwavering support earned admiration from millions of Israelis.

Lindsey Graham Had a Role in Senate Leadership

Over the course of his Senate career, Graham held several influential leadership positions.

Among his assignments were service on the:

  • Senate Committee on Appropriations
  • Senate Judiciary Committee
  • Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works

He also chaired the Senate Budget Committee during his congressional career.

Graham was often involved in major legislative debates involving federal spending, judicial confirmations, immigration policy, and national security legislation.

Tributes From South Carolina

South Carolina leaders also reflected on Graham's decades of public service.

Governor Henry McMaster described him as "irreplaceable" and praised his dedication to both South Carolina and the nation.

Graham remained closely identified with his home state throughout his career and lived in Seneca, South Carolina. He never married.

Lindsey Graham Left a Lasting Political Legacy

Whether admired or criticized, Graham remained one of the most recognizable figures in modern Republican politics.

His career spanned more than three decades in Congress and included major debates over military intervention, judicial appointments, terrorism, immigration, and U.S. foreign policy. His influence extended well beyond South Carolina as he became a regular presence on national television and an important voice in Senate negotiations involving both domestic and international issues.

His reported death marks the end of a lengthy career that left a significant imprint on the Republican Party, the Senate, and U.S. foreign policy.
