A young Massachusetts State Trooper who had just finished his shift gave his life early Wednesday morning in a selfless act of bravery, stopping a wrong-way driver before the reckless motorist could cause even greater devastation on a busy highway.

Trooper Kevin Trainor, 30, was heading home on Route 1 North in Lynnfield around 2 a.m. when a 911 call came in about a vehicle speeding southbound in the northbound lanes. Without hesitation, Trainor positioned himself to intercept the danger. Moments later, at 2:04 a.m., his unmarked SUV was struck head-on by a Jeep driven by the wrong-way motorist. Both men died at the scene or shortly after.

A Hero’s Final Act

State Police Colonel Geoffrey Noble praised Trainor’s courage during a news conference, stating:

“Trooper Trainor today saved lives this morning. His courage, his commitment to serve the citizens of the Commonwealth, and his willingness to put his life on the line prevented an even greater tragedy. I am confident that had this not occurred, there would have been countless other tragedies down the road. He will be remembered as a hero.”

Trainor, a native of Salem, Massachusetts, joined the State Police in 2023 after serving as a corrections officer in Essex County. In his short time with the department, he became a respected “trooper coach,” mentoring new recruits. He is survived by his fiancée Jessica, his mother Barbara, a sister, and three brothers.

Brian Williams of the State Police union added:

“Trooper Trainor is a hero. He served with courage, integrity, and an unwavering commitment… His sacrifice is a solemn reminder of the risks our members face each and every day.”

Honoring a Fallen Hero

Troopers gathered outside Massachusetts General Hospital and escorted Trainor’s body in a solemn four-mile procession to the state medical examiner’s office. Governor Maura Healey expressed her heartbreak and called on the public to show gratitude to law enforcement.

“Go out and find a police officer, find a trooper, take the time to give them a hug… Not just today, but every day. Do that for Kevin.”
