A powerful, fast-moving cold front is setting up a sweeping weather crisis across the United States, stretching from Maine to Texas and putting more than twenty-five states on alert. The system is unleashing a rare combination of severe storms, heavy rain, flash flooding risk, and late-season snow, creating dangerous travel conditions and dramatic temperature swings across multiple regions.

Severe Storm Threat Expands Across the South

Severe weather is expected to ignite across Texas, Louisiana, and Arkansas on Tuesday, May 5, with forecasters warning of damaging winds, large hail, and the possibility of tornadoes.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Storm Prediction Center has placed parts of North Texas, eastern Oklahoma, much of Arkansas, southern Missouri, and Memphis, Tennessee under a Level 2 out of 5 severe storm risk.

By Wednesday, the threat zone shifts farther south, impacting Southeast Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama. At the same time, bands of heavy rain will continue pushing across the Midwest and Great Lakes before reaching the Northeast, increasing concerns for flash flooding and widespread travel delays already being reported across the central and eastern U.S.

Rapid Temperature Drop Shocks Central U.S.

Behind the advancing front, temperatures are expected to plunge sharply, falling 20 to 30 degrees below seasonal averages.

Conditions that recently felt like late spring will suddenly resemble early March. In parts of the southern Plains and the Mississippi Valley, temperatures are forecast to drop from the upper 80s and 90s into the 40s overnight, marking one of the most dramatic temperature swings of the season.

Late Season Snowstorm Targets the Rockies

The central Rockies are preparing for a significant late-season snow event, bringing hazardous winter conditions back to areas that have already transitioned toward spring.

Denver is expected to receive 5 to 8 inches of snow, while higher elevations across Colorado and Wyoming could see 1 to 2 feet of accumulation.

Winter storm warnings and watches remain in effect along the Interstate 25 corridor from Denver to Cheyenne, Wyoming. Strong wind gusts reaching up to 45 mph could combine with heavy snowfall to create whiteout conditions and extremely dangerous mountain travel. The snow is expected to taper off late Wednesday as the system exits the region.

Flooding Risk Expands Into the Midwest and Northeast

Heavy rainfall tied to the system is forecast to deliver 2 to 3 inches of precipitation across Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, and Tennessee by Friday.

While the rain may help ease ongoing drought conditions in southern Georgia and parts of the Northeast coast, it also raises significant concerns for flash flooding in urban areas including Indianapolis, Louisville, and Cleveland.

Major transportation corridors, including the Interstate 95 corridor stretching into New York City, are also at risk for delays and hazardous travel conditions as the storm system pushes east.

Multi-Day Weather Disruption Expected

The system is expected to linger for several days, continuously producing severe storms, heavy rain, and disruptive weather conditions across much of the country before finally moving out by early Thursday.
