Meta Layoffs Continue Despite Record Profits as Employee Frustration Mounts

Meta Layoffs are once again making headlines after the social media giant eliminated approximately 8,000 jobs despite reporting one of the strongest financial quarters in its history.

The latest workforce reduction, which affects roughly 10% of Meta's global workforce, comes as the company aggressively increases spending on artificial intelligence infrastructure while also facing renewed legal scrutiny over its efforts to silence the author of the bestselling memoir Careless People.

The parent company of Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and Threads reported first-quarter 2026 revenue of $56.31 billion and net income of $26.8 billion, underscoring the stark contrast between record profitability and significant job cuts. The layoffs have reportedly fueled declining morale among employees; many of whom have questioned why thousands of positions were eliminated while the company continues to generate enormous profits.

AI Investments Drive Cost-Cutting Strategy

Meta executives have made it clear that artificial intelligence remains the company's top priority.

In a memo to employees, Chief People Officer Janelle Gale said the workforce reductions are intended to help Meta "run the company more efficiently" while offsetting the enormous investments being made in AI.

Chief Financial Officer Susan Li reinforced that message during the company's first-quarter earnings call, explaining that Meta is pursuing a leaner operating model to support projected capital expenditures of between $125 billion and $145 billion in 2026. The spending represents a dramatic increase from approximately $72.2 billion invested during 2025.

During a recent employee town hall, CEO Mark Zuckerberg reportedly acknowledged that rising AI infrastructure costs played a significant role in the Meta layoffs and did not rule out additional workforce reductions later this year.

The strategy echoes Zuckerberg's "Year of Efficiency" initiative announced in 2023, which resulted in approximately 21,000 layoffs across two major rounds. According to reports, Meta has now eliminated well over 33,000 positions since late 2022.

Record Financial Performance Contrasts with Meta Layoffs

Unlike earlier rounds of layoffs that followed pandemic-era hiring surges, Meta is now reducing staff while operating from a position of financial strength.

The company's first-quarter revenue grew roughly 33% year over year, representing its fastest pace of growth since 2021. Investors have largely rewarded Meta's aggressive focus on AI, even as thousands of employees lose their jobs.

The broader technology industry is experiencing similar restructuring. According to Layoffs.fyi, more than 135,000 technology workers have been laid off during the first five months of 2026 as major companies redirect billions of dollars toward artificial intelligence development.

Industry leaders including Amazon, Microsoft, Alphabet and Meta are expected to collectively invest roughly $725 billion in AI initiatives this year.

With Meta Layoffs Employee Morale Continues to Decline

Reports from current and former employees suggest morale inside the company has deteriorated considerably. The Meta layoffs are definitely part of the problem.

Several workers told WIRED that dissatisfaction has spread throughout the company, with some employees even hoping to be included in layoffs because of the generous severance packages, which reportedly include 16 weeks of pay and up to 18 months of health-care coverage.

Employee frustration extends beyond job reductions.

Meta previously reduced the stock component of annual raises by 5%, following an earlier 10% reduction. As a result, reported median total compensation has declined even as Zuckerberg aggressively recruits elite AI researchers with compensation packages reportedly reaching into the hundreds of millions of dollars.

Workplace Monitoring Raises Privacy Concerns

Another source of employee dissatisfaction involves Meta's expanding use of workplace monitoring software.

Earlier this year, the company began deploying the Model Capability Initiative on work laptops used by U.S.-based employees. According to reports, the software records keystrokes, mouse movements, clicks and periodic screenshots from workplace applications such as Gmail and Slack.

Meta says the data will help train AI agents capable of performing human workflows.

Chief Technology Officer Andrew Bosworth has reportedly confirmed that employees cannot opt out of the monitoring program in the United States, although European employees are exempt because of privacy protections under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

The program has sparked internal protests, with workers distributing flyers describing Meta as an "Employee Data Extraction Factory" while encouraging colleagues to sign an online petition opposing the initiative.

Along with Meta Layoffs Litigation Intensifies

Careless People Author Sues Meta, Claiming Company Tried to Silence Her Bestselling Memoir - USA Herald

Meta is simultaneously confronting a high-profile legal dispute involving former executive Sarah Wynn-Williams, author of the bestselling memoir Careless People: A Cautionary Tale of Power, Greed, and Lost Idealism.

Wynn-Williams, who served as Facebook's director of global public policy between 2011 and 2017, filed a lawsuit accusing Meta of unlawfully attempting to silence her through a confidential arbitration process. She argues that the severance agreement she signed after leaving the company is unenforceable because it was executed under financial duress.

The memoir contains numerous allegations involving Meta's corporate culture, leadership, workplace practices and the company's past efforts to expand into China. Meta has consistently denied the book's claims, describing them as false, misleading and defamatory.

Meta previously secured an emergency arbitration order prohibiting Wynn-Williams from promoting the book or making additional disparaging public comments about the company. According to her lawsuit, Meta has sought damages of $50,000 for each alleged violation of the agreement and has monitored her public appearances to ensure compliance with the gag order.

The legal battle has drawn criticism from free-speech advocates and whistleblower supporters, who argue the dispute raises broader questions about the enforceability of non-disparagement agreements and the balance between protecting confidential corporate information and allowing former employees to speak publicly about alleged misconduct. The case remains pending in federal court.

Meta Doubles Down on AI Future

Despite growing employee unrest and ongoing litigation, Meta continues to prioritize artificial intelligence as the centerpiece of its long-term strategy.

The company is investing unprecedented sums in AI infrastructure, recruiting elite researchers, expanding data center capacity and developing increasingly sophisticated AI models. Company executives argue these investments are essential to maintaining Meta's competitive position, even if they require painful workforce reductions in the near term.

Whether that strategy ultimately strengthens the company—or further damages employee trust—will likely become clearer as Meta continues balancing record profits with continued restructuring.
