Meta Ties Executive Fortune to $9.5 Trillion AI “Moonshot” as Capital Spending Surges Ahead of Earnings

Meta Platforms is escalating its artificial intelligence bet to historic levels, linking executive compensation to a valuation target so extreme it would require the company to become worth $9.46 trillion. The move comes as the $1.7 trillion tech giant prepares to report first quarter 2026 earnings on Wednesday, with investors bracing for a sharp rise in capital spending and mounting pressure to prove its AI strategy can catch up to rivals.

At the center of the storm is a compensation plan that could reshape how Wall Street views Meta’s risk, reward, and long-term AI ambitions.

A $9.46 Trillion Valuation Target No Company Has Ever Reached

Meta disclosed last month that it granted sweeping stock option packages to five of its most senior executives. Each executive received seven tranches of stock options with exercise prices ranging from $1,116 to $3,727 per share.

With Meta stock currently trading at $671.34, the company would need a 66% rally just to reach the lowest strike price. At the top end, Meta would need to surge to a valuation of $9.46 trillion for the final tranche to become profitable.

No company in history has ever reached that level. For context, it is nearly twice the size of Nvidia’s $5.3 trillion valuation, currently the highest in the world.

Elite Executives Positioned for Massive Payouts

The Meta board, chaired by CEO and founder Mark Zuckerberg, granted the awards to a tightly selected group of executives: chief technology officer Andrew Bosworth, chief product officer Christopher Cox, chief financial officer Susan Li, chief legal officer Curtis Mahoney, and president and vice chairman Dina Powell McCormick.

If Meta’s stock reaches the highest threshold, the options alone would be worth $625,592,443, according to Equilar figures cited by The New York Times. Including restricted stock units, total potential payouts for each executive range from $787 million to $921 million.

“Moonshot” Incentives Designed for AI Dominance

The structure of the compensation plan reflects Meta’s aggressive push into artificial intelligence and its need to retain top talent in a fiercely competitive market.

Ken Mahoney, CEO of retirement planning and investment firm Mahoney Asset Management, said the awards are tied to extreme long-term scenarios.

“These are good moves for talent retention, and they cost nothing upfront,” Mahoney said. “It is a good way to align some incentives with moonshot outcomes, but we have to remember this $9.46 trillion number is more than a 5x of current valuations, and realistically, it’s not something that would play out any time soon. Of course, they know this too.”

He added that the structure reflects “extreme upside scenarios into the future, such as if Meta were to become the most valuable company of all time, which would have to surpass some of the other tech giants.”

Zuckerberg’s Position and Meta’s AI Arms Race

Mark Zuckerberg, who takes a $1 salary at Meta, was not included in the latest compensation awards. The company does, however, pay for his personal security, which totaled $25.1 million last year. His stake in Meta is valued at roughly $230 billion.

The aggressive compensation strategy comes as Meta continues to trail competitors in the AI race. Companies such as Anthropic, OpenAI, and Google are widely viewed as having more advanced AI systems at present.

Meta has attempted to close the gap through aggressive spending and acquisitions, including a $14.3 billion investment in ScaleAI and the recruitment of cofounder Alexandr Wang. Despite the effort, results have yet to fully materialize.

Regulatory Pressure and AI Acquisition Setback

Meta is also dealing with regulatory complications after being ordered this week to unwind its $2 billion acquisition of Manus, a Chinese-founded AI startup that relocated to Singapore.

The reversal creates operational disruption, as Manus employees have already been integrated into Meta’s AI division and early investors have exited their positions.

Earnings Test Looms as Capital Spending Surges

Meta’s earnings report arrives alongside results from Alphabet, Amazon, and Microsoft, offering a broader snapshot of Big Tech performance and global advertising demand.

John Belton, portfolio manager at Gabelli Funds, said investor attention will focus on consumer strength and geopolitical risk.

He noted the importance of “the extent to which the Middle East conflict has impacted advertising budgets,” warning that ongoing tensions could “derail” growth in digital advertising even as AI boosts engagement.

Meta’s capital expenditures are expected to climb sharply to between $115 billion and $135 billion this year, driven largely by investments in its Superintelligence Labs.

Mahoney said that investor sentiment will hinge heavily on those spending forecasts.

“This is what the market keeps getting hung up on, and we think if they guide capex higher than what is estimated, then it could be an issue for the stock’s reaction,” he said.

Revenue Growth Strong, But Expectations High

Analysts expect Meta to report first quarter revenue of about $55.5 billion, representing roughly 31% year over year growth. That figure sits in the middle of the company’s own guidance range of $53.5 billion to $56.5 billion.

Earnings per share are projected at $6.68, according to AlphaSense Visible Alpha.

Despite strong revenue expectations, the company faces mounting scrutiny over whether its massive AI spending spree will deliver returns that justify trillion dollar ambitions or deepen investor concern over runaway capital costs.
