As the 2026 FIFA World Cup shifts into Matchday 2, all eyes turn to a fascinating Group A showdown between co-host Mexico and a dangerous South Korea side — a matchup that could deliver fireworks and potentially high drama on the pitch.

Both teams enter with three points after opening victories — Mexico cruised past South Africa 2-0, while South Korea edged Czechia 2-1. Mexico holds the edge on goal differential, but history suggests this won’t be an easy night for the hosts. The two sides played to a thrilling 2-2 draw in a friendly less than a year ago.

Kickoff is set for 9 p.m. ET at Estadio Guadalajara, where the atmosphere is expected to be electric.

FanDuel Sportsbook has Mexico as modest +105 favorites on the 90-minute money line, with South Korea at +300 and the draw at +220. The over/under sits at 2.5 goals, reflecting expectations of an open, attacking game. Raúl Jiménez is the favorite to score at +185.

SportsLine expert Jon Eimer, who has been red-hot on soccer picks in 2026, is leaning heavily toward the Over 2.5 total goals. He points to South Korea’s tendency for high-scoring affairs (their last four World Cup matches have averaged four goals) and notes that Mexico showed defensive vulnerabilities in their opener despite the clean sheet.

This contest carries extra weight for Mexico, who are chasing a strong group stage performance on home soil, while South Korea aims to build on their solid start and prove they can compete with one of CONCACAF’s powerhouses. With both teams capable of scoring and Mexico potentially exposed at the back, this could easily turn into a goal-fest — or a tense, tactical battle that goes down to the wire.

As the tournament heats up, this match could set the tone for Group A and provide early clues about which teams are serious contenders for advancement — and possibly a deep run in the knockout stages.
