Millions of Medicare enrollees struggling with obesity are about to gain access to weight-loss drugs for the first time in the program’s history, thanks to a temporary pilot program launching July 1 that promises steep discounts on popular GLP-1 medications.

The initiative, called Medicare GLP-1 Bridge, is part of a deal the Trump administration struck with drugmakers Eli Lilly and Novo Nordisk to reduce the cost of their blockbuster anti-obesity drugs. Eligible seniors will pay just $50 per month for medications like Wegovy, Zepbound, and Foundayo — a dramatic reduction from cash-pay prices that can run hundreds of dollars.

For people like Mary Abrahamson, a 71-year-old rural Washington resident who has already lost weight using a compounded version of tirzepatide, the program could be life-changing. She and her husband, who live on Social Security and a small pension, see it as a chance to afford Zepbound while also saving for other priorities like home repairs or a dream vacation.

This pilot program represents a significant shift in how Medicare approaches obesity treatment, moving away from the long-standing prohibition on covering weight-loss drugs. Doctors and patient advocates have argued for years that obesity should be treated like any other disease, and the Bridge program could open the door for millions who have been priced out of these transformative medications.

However, not everyone qualifies. Strict criteria based on BMI and specific health conditions mean some seniors — like Diane Lane-Cormier, who was prescribed Zepbound for sleep apnea but couldn’t afford it — may be left out. The program also excludes those already receiving GLP-1 drugs through Part D for diabetes or other approved conditions.

As the rollout begins, questions remain about how many will actually participate, whether supply will meet demand, and what happens when the pilot ends next year. CMS officials expect single-digit millions initially, but the long-term impact on Medicare spending and enrollee health will be closely watched.

For many, this is more than just access to medication — it’s validation that their condition deserves treatment. The coming months will reveal whether this bridge truly leads to lasting change for America’s seniors battling obesity.
