Missouri Man Sentenced to 46 Months for Possessing Machine Gun After Reckless Social Media Post

A Missouri man is heading to federal prison for nearly four years following a series of reckless actions that culminated in a serious legal showdown. Jadiah Dawontra Hines, a 20-year-old resident of Missouri, received a sentence of 46 months behind bars after a court determined that his possession of a modified firearm and his status as a convicted felon warranted significant prison time.

The sentencing, handed down on Tuesday by U.S. District Judge John A. Ross, concludes a case that drew significant attention due to the alarming nature of the evidence presented against the defendant. Hines previously pleaded guilty in March to one count of possessing a machine gun and one count of being a felon in possession of a firearm.

The Evidence: From Social Media to the Courtroom

The case against Hines gained traction after law enforcement officials uncovered evidence of highly dangerous behavior shared on digital platforms. According to court records, Hines was in possession of a stolen Glock .40-caliber pistol. However, the weapon was not in its standard configuration.

The firearm had been modified with a machine gun conversion device, commonly known as a "switch." This illegal component effectively bypasses the mechanical limitations of a semi-automatic handgun, allowing it to fire as a fully automatic weapon. The presence of such a device creates a significant public safety threat, as it turns a handheld pistol into a weapon capable of rapid, indiscriminate fire.

Perhaps the most troubling aspect of the investigation involved a photograph that Hines himself posted to social media. The image depicted Hines holding the modified Glock while a small child sat between his legs. In the photo, Hines is seen pointing the weapon into the air directly above the child’s head. This blatant disregard for firearm safety shocked investigators and the public alike.

The situation escalated when a woman confronted Hines regarding the irresponsible nature of the photograph. Instead of de-escalating the situation, court documents state that Hines responded with a direct threat, telling the woman that he would shoot her in the face.

A History of Criminal Activity

The federal sentencing takes into account not only the severity of the firearm offense but also the defendant's prior criminal history. Hines was already well-known to local law enforcement long before this federal case began.

Court records indicate that Hines had previous convictions for stealing firearms in New Madrid County and Mississippi County. Additionally, he held a prior conviction for stealing a vehicle in Scott County. At the time of this federal sentencing, Hines was also navigating legal challenges in circuit court, specifically involving probation violations connected to his earlier cases.

The stolen status of the Glock pistol used in this incident was confirmed by authorities, who traced the weapon back to a report in Scott County. This added another layer of legal trouble for Hines, as the unauthorized possession of a stolen, modified firearm is treated with extreme severity in federal court.

The Legal Aftermath and Public Safety

The investigation was a collaborative effort involving local and federal agencies, including the Charleston Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF). Assistant U.S. Attorney Timothy Willis led the prosecution, ensuring that the gravity of Hines' actions was clearly articulated to the court.

The 46-month sentence serves as a reminder of the strict federal approach toward illegal firearm modifications. The use of "switches" has become a growing concern for law enforcement agencies across the United States. These small, easily concealable devices can turn a standard, legal firearm into a restricted weapon, often leading to severe mandatory minimums for those caught in possession of them.

By imposing this sentence, Judge Ross has highlighted the judicial system's commitment to removing illegal weapons from the community and addressing the patterns of behavior that threaten public safety. For Jadiah Dawontra Hines, the next four years will be spent in federal custody, marking the end of a reckless chapter that put both himself and those around him at risk.
