A former senior marketing executive for Major League Soccer (MLS) has filed a bombshell lawsuit in New York federal court, accusing the league of retaliatory firing after he repeatedly raised concerns about racial discrimination within its upper ranks.

Cedric Shine, who is Black, says the league's leadership orchestrated a campaign of retaliation that ultimately ended his career, left his reputation tarnished, and caused lasting damage to his emotional and professional well-being.

Promotion Denied, Then Granted—But With Strings Attached

According to the lawsuit filed Friday, Shine was initially passed over for a promotion in favor of a white colleague. He claims the decision reversed only after he complained to human resources, landing him the title of senior director of cultural marketing.

But instead of support in his new position, Shine alleges that MLS executives retaliated, creating what he described as a "toxic leadership" environment. The defendants in the complaint include Vice President Marciela Garcia and Chief Marketing Officer Radhika Duggal, whom Shine accuses of stonewalling his work, pulling funding from events he spearheaded, and fabricating complaints about his job performance.

“Move On” or Face Consequences

Shine says he didn’t back down, continuing to flag the hostility to Camilo Durana, a top executive overseeing both Garcia and Duggal. Instead of receiving help, he alleges that he was further isolated—removed from vital email chains and communications essential to fulfilling his responsibilities.

The complaint outlines that Shine tried to escalate the matter to Deputy Commissioner Gary Stevenson, hoping for a fair hearing. But before that meeting could occur, Shine was terminated.

MLS cited profanity used on a work call nearly a month prior as the cause for dismissal—a justification Shine labels as nothing more than a “pretext” for unlawful retaliation.

Emotional and Financial Toll Laid Bare

In the emotionally charged lawsuit, Shine said MLS's conduct left him humiliated, financially damaged, and emotionally scarred.

“My self-esteem, self-respect, and well-being have been irreversibly harmed,” Shine stated in the complaint, asserting that the retaliation continues to be a source of distress and economic hardship.

MLS Responds: “Claims Have No Merit”

MLS wasted no time issuing a rebuttal. In a statement to Law360, a league spokesperson said:

“Shine’s claims have no merit and the league intends to vigorously defend the recently filed lawsuit.”

The league maintained its stance as an organization committed to equity and inclusion, though it declined to address specific allegations.

Legal Representation and Outlook

Shine is represented by Daniel H. Kovel of Kovel Law PLLC, a firm experienced in employment and civil rights litigation. As of Friday, legal counsel for Major League Soccer had not yet been publicly disclosed.

This case joins a growing wave of lawsuits scrutinizing corporate America’s response to racial bias allegations, especially within high-profile organizations. For MLS, a league that markets itself as diverse and progressive, the accusations are a gut-check moment—one that could shape its cultural legacy as much as its on-field performance.
