U.S. federal authorities are scrambling to investigate a bizarre and highly suspicious act of vandalism on the National Mall: a massive “8647” carved into the grass near the Washington Monument, clearly visible from above and raising immediate concerns about a possible coded threat against President Donald Trump.

Live webcam footage from the top of the Washington Monument captured the striking markings on Thursday afternoon — a prominent “8” followed by a “6,” “4,” and “7.” In restaurant slang, “86” is widely understood to mean “remove” or “get rid of” something, while Trump is the 47th president of the United States.

The U.S. Park Police responded to reports of vandalism on the west lawn of the Washington Monument around 11:30 a.m. Grass samples have been collected for testing, and the investigation remains active.

A Department of the Interior spokesperson condemned the act as “deranged vandalism,” stating that “any threat against the president is taken very seriously” and that those responsible will be held accountable.

This strange incident comes at a particularly sensitive time — just weeks before America’s 250th anniversary celebrations on the National Mall, which have been personally overseen by Trump and include major renovations like the controversial “American-flag blue” repaint of the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool.

It also echoes a recent case involving former FBI Director James Comey, who was charged with making threats after posting a photo of seashells arranged in the same “8647” pattern on a beach. Comey later deleted the post, claiming he was unaware of the violent connotation.

Whether this latest National Mall etching is a deliberate political threat, a tasteless prank, or something else entirely is still unclear. But the timing and symbolism have already set off alarm bells in Washington, especially given the heightened security around the president and major upcoming national events.

As investigators work to determine how and when the massive numbers were etched into the historic grounds, many are left wondering: Is this an isolated act of defiance, or part of a broader pattern of escalating rhetoric against the current administration?
