NASA's discovery of more than 6,000 confirmed exoplanets has transformed scientists' understanding of the universe, but one major prize has remained elusive: the first confirmed exomoon. Now, astronomers say a super weird celestial object orbiting a distant brown dwarf could become the strongest candidate yet for that distinction.

The unusual discovery, described in a new study published in Nature, reveals a rare three-level cosmic system in which a moon-like object orbits a brown dwarf that itself circles a distant star.

While researchers stop short of officially declaring it the first confirmed exomoon, they say the finding represents a significant breakthrough in the search for these long-suspected worlds.

Exomoon in a Rare Three-Tiered Cosmic System

The newly identified system, known as CD-35 2722, lies approximately 72 light-years from Earth and bears little resemblance to our own solar system.

Astronomers used the European Southern Observatory's Very Large Telescope (VLT) to study the young stellar system, which is centered around a star roughly half the mass of the Sun.

Orbiting that star is a brown dwarf—an object too massive to be considered a planet but not large enough to ignite nuclear fusion like a true star. Researchers estimate the brown dwarf is about 30 times the mass of Jupiter.

Even more intriguing, the brown dwarf appears to have its own companion: an object roughly the mass of Jupiter that circles it instead of the central star.

That unusual arrangement has left astronomers debating exactly what the object should be called.

Scientists Call the System "Super Weird"

Study co-author Kevin Hoy, an astronomer at Chile's Universidad Diego Portales and the Millennium Nucleus of Young Exoplanets and their Moons (YEMS), described the system as unlike anything previously observed.

"The system is somewhat hard to define using solar system-based words like 'planet' and 'moon,'" Hoy said.

Because the Jupiter-mass object does not orbit a star directly, scientists cannot simply classify it as an exoplanet. Instead, it circles the brown dwarf, creating a hierarchy rarely observed in astronomy.

Hoy explained the dilemma succinctly:

"The exosatellite is clearly massive enough to be a planet, but it does not orbit a star, though it orbits an object that orbits a star."

It May Be the First Identified Exomoon

An exomoon, also known as an extrasolar moon, is defined as a natural satellite orbiting a planet or planet-like object outside our solar system.

Although NASA has cataloged more than 6,000 confirmed exoplanets, astronomers have never conclusively verified the existence of an exomoon despite years of searching.

Several promising candidates have emerged over the past decade, but none has produced enough observational evidence to satisfy the scientific community.

Researchers believe the newly discovered object represents the strongest case yet.

The Nature study suggests it may be best described as either an exosatellite or an exomoon, though astronomers acknowledge that no universally accepted definition currently exists.

A Scientific Debate Over Definitions

The unusual nature of CD-35 2722 has highlighted an ongoing challenge in astronomy: classification.

Unlike our solar system, where planets clearly orbit the Sun and moons orbit planets, the boundaries become much blurrier in more exotic systems.

Study co-author Alice Zurlo, director of YEMS, said traditional terminology struggles to describe what astronomers are observing.

"We have a clear delineation between the planets and the sun in the solar system, so defining things like moons is simple," Zurlo explained.

"In the CD-35 2722 system, where we are blurring the lines between stars, planets, and moons, the whole thing becomes more complicated to describe."

Even so, Zurlo believes the object's position within the system naturally suggests a moon-like identity.

"Being the third wheel in this system makes us want to call it a moon, even if it is nothing like the small, rocky moons we have in our system."

Why the Discovery Matters

The discovery extends beyond simply naming one unusual object.

Astronomers say the research demonstrates a promising new method for identifying potential exomoons throughout the Milky Way. That technique could ultimately lead to the first universally accepted confirmation of one of these elusive satellites.

Within our own solar system, scientists have identified 891 moons orbiting planets and dwarf planets, including more than 200 around Saturn alone.

Given those numbers, many astronomers have long believed exomoons should be common elsewhere in the galaxy. Until now, however, definitive proof has remained out of reach.

Researching the Exomoon

Additional observations will be required before researchers can officially classify the newly discovered object as an exomoon.

Regardless of its final designation, scientists say the finding represents an important milestone in the exploration of planetary systems beyond our own.

"As exotic as it is," Zurlo said, "this system is truly unique and represents a breakthrough: the first plausible detection of an exosatellite."
