NASA Quietly Moves to Revive Missing SR-71 as New X-Plane Mystery Grows

sr-71

For those of us who grew up around California’s Antelope Valley, the Blackbird was more than something seen in aviation books.

As a child, I remember seeing that very same SR-71 displayed outside Lockheed’s operations in the area — an aircraft so futuristic that even sitting motionless, it looked like something that had arrived from decades ahead.

Now that Blackbird has suddenly become part of a modern aviation mystery.

NASA SR-71A tail No. 844, which spent decades displayed at NASA’s Armstrong Flight Research Center at Edwards Air Force Base, disappeared from its familiar position sometime before May 17, according to commercial satellite imagery reviewed by Aviation Week. Aviation Week

And the story has changed considerably since the aircraft was first reported missing.

Aviation Week now reports that NASA quietly began exploring a project to return the SR-71 to flight and contacted several former Blackbird personnel about helping with the effort. One retired specialist reportedly received an offer to assist in putting the aircraft back into the sky nearly 27 years after its final flight.

That makes tail 844's removal far more interesting than routine preservation.

This particular aircraft made the final SR-71 flight in October 1999. During NASA service, Blackbirds were used for research involving propulsion, aerodynamics, thermal protection, atmospheric science and high-speed instrumentation. NASA describes the aircraft as capable of more than Mach 3 and altitudes exceeding 85,000 feet. NASA

Then came NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman.

During the recent All-In Summit, Isaacman displayed an unidentified dark aircraft beneath the words “Rebuilding our X-plane portfolio.” Its shape immediately invited comparisons with the Blackbird. When someone called it an SR-71, Isaacman responded, “You sure that’s a Blackbird?” He also said NASA was returning to the business of flying “high and fast again.” TWZ

The broader timing is remarkable. Air Force Secretary Troy Meink recently disclosed this month that the United States now has “on-orbit space control weapons capable of defending the Joint Force against hostile adversary action.” The Air Force has not disclosed exactly what those systems are. Air Force

Meanwhile, NASA’s X-59 has already flown 25 test missions and reached Mach 1.2 and roughly 49,000 feet as the agency rebuilds its experimental-flight capability. NASA

So, the most fascinating possibility is not that an old spy plane somehow became a spacecraft.

It is that NASA may be using one of the greatest high-speed research platforms ever built to help America take the next technological step beyond it.

And tail No. 844 may fly again.

What research would bringing the SR-71 back make possible that current aircraft cannot do? That would help explain the cost of restoring it.
