In a bid to safeguard student-athletes and preserve the integrity of collegiate sports, NCAA President Charlie Baker issued a fervent plea on Wednesday for a nationwide prohibition on prop bets, citing escalating reports of harassment directed at both college and professional athletes.

In his impassioned statement, disseminated via X, formerly known as Twitter, Baker vowed to engage with states still permitting prop bets, pressing them to emulate the jurisdictions that have already enacted bans. "Our mission is clear: to eradicate college prop bets from all wagering domains," Baker declared, highlighting Ohio, Vermont, and Maryland as pioneering states in this regard.

Rising Tension Ahead of March Madness

Baker's resolute stance comes on the eve of the eagerly anticipated Sweet 16 round of the men's NCAA basketball tournament, a period traditionally marked by a surge in legal sports betting activities across the nation. The announcement also dovetails with the NCAA's recent rollout of the "Draw the Line" initiative, aimed at combatting the scourge of collegiate sports betting.

State-Level Backlash and Ongoing Investigations

Last month, the Ohio Casino Control Commission moved to outlaw prop bets on college sports following the NCAA's forceful advocacy, backed by Ohio Governor Mike DeWine. The decisive action was prompted by a slew of threats targeting college players within the state. Notably, Ohio joins a cadre of states, including Colorado, Florida, Illinois, and Indiana, in proactively banning prop bets while maintaining a semblance of traditional sports wagering.

NCAA President Calls For Nationwide Ban On Prop Bets : Nationwide Implications and NBA Inquiries

Baker's clarion call transcends the realm of college athletics, resonating with ongoing investigations into prop bet anomalies within professional leagues. Amid reports of betting irregularities surrounding little-utilized Toronto Raptors forward Jontay Porter, the NBA finds itself embroiled in a probe examining prop bets on Porter's performance. ESPN's revelation of suspicious betting patterns has intensified scrutiny on the matter.

Upholding Sporting Integrity Amidst Adversity

"As sports betting proliferates, the specter of prop bets casts a shadow over the sanctity of competition, subjecting athletes to undue harassment," Baker lamented in his Wednesday address, underscoring the imperative for concerted action. Despite strides made in certain jurisdictions, recent incidents underscore the urgency of continued vigilance and regulatory fortification.

In the wake of these revelations, the NBA has remained conspicuously silent, refraining from immediate comment on the unfolding investigations. The league's response—or lack thereof—promises to be a pivotal factor as stakeholders navigate the intricate terrain of sports wagering integrity.
