Nedra Talley dies at 80, closing the final chapter on The Ronettes, the legendary 1960s girl group whose harmonies helped define an entire generation of pop music.

Talley Ross, the last surviving member of the trio, passed away Sunday morning at her home, surrounded by family, according to a statement from her daughter. She was 80.

Her daughter, Nedra K. Ross, wrote on Facebook that her mother died peacefully in her bed, “safe in her own home with her family close, knowing she was loved.”

Tributes highlight a lasting musical legacy

The official Ronettes page also confirmed her death, describing her as a guiding light within the group and a key figure in shaping its identity.

“It is with heavy hearts that we share the news of Nedra Talley Ross’ passing,” the post read, calling her voice, style, and presence central to a sound that changed music history.

The tribute added that her influence would live on through the group’s legacy, ending with a farewell message thanking her for “the magic.”

From New York beginnings to global fame

Born January 27, 1946, in New York City, Talley helped form the group in 1959 alongside cousins Ronnie Spector and Estelle Bennett. The group began performing under early names such as Ronnie and the Relatives and later the Darling Sisters before becoming The Ronettes.

Initially, Talley and Bennett sang background vocals while Ronnie Spector took the lead, building the foundation of a sound that would soon echo across decades.

Breakthrough under Phil Spector’s “Wall of Sound”

The group rose to international fame after signing with producer Phil Spector, whose signature “Wall of Sound” production style reshaped pop music in the 1960s.

Their breakout single, “Be My Baby,” became a defining hit, followed by songs such as “Baby I Love You,” “Walking in the Rain,” and “Do I Love You?”

The Ronettes achieved major success in both the United States and the United Kingdom, sharing stages with acts like The Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton, and The Yardbirds. They also opened for The Beatles during their final U.S. tour in 1966.

Breakup, personal struggles, and lasting recognition

The group disbanded in 1967. Ronnie Spector later married Phil Spector in a turbulent relationship that ended in divorce in 1974.

The Ronettes were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2007, two years before Estelle Bennett’s death. Ronnie Spector died in 2022, leaving Talley as the final surviving member.

During their induction, Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards recalled the group’s impact on him, saying their music “touched my heart then and still does.”
